Hello everyone my name is David. As a young child I grew up on the soft sandy beaches of Key West, Florida. Then my life flipped upside down when my dad retired and moved us up into the cold mountain ranges of Montana. Montana is a state of winter sports and activities. Neither of which I enjoy. I stayed in Montana for university where I majored in both mechanical engineering and archeology. Archeology afforded me the opportunity to travel around the world and my latest adventure brought me here to Japan, which is my first Asian country.In the future I hope to take my experience here teaching to a career teaching archeology at a university level. My days off are normally spent by trying new food at resturants and studying Japanese.I have alot of trips planned to explore and learn more about Japans history and culture in the years i will spend here.

I cant wait to meet everyone!😆

大家好！我是你们的新老师，我叫周方旭。
我的家乡在大连，那里是一座美丽的海滨城市。最近，我喜欢上了做菜，我最喜欢做的菜是韩国菜。因为我非常喜欢吃辣的东西。
休息的时候，我会经常去新大久保买韩国食材，比如韩国辣白菜等。我在网上和韩国人一起学习如何做正宗的韩国菜，比如韩国拌饭，泡菜汤，韩国泡菜饼等。但是紫菜包饭对我来说非常难，我还没有学会。

皆さん、こんにちは！皆さんの新しい中国語先生、周方旭です。
私の故郷は大連で綺麗な港都市です。最近、料理を作ることに夢中になって、一番好きなのは韓国料理です。なぜならば、私は辛いものが大好きです。
休みの時は、よく新大久保に行って、韓国の食材を買います。例えば、韓国キムチです。
私はインターネットで韓国人と一緒に韓国料理を勉強して、今はピビンバ、チゲ、チヂミを作れます。しかし、キムパまだ作れないです。

Hello everyone! Winter has come in full effect as we get into the middle of　December.I hope everyone stays warm and take extra care of your health before the end of year holidays!

Today I will share about a party in my hometown that happens at the end of November. This party is called SCHOOLIES and it is a huge party for high school students that have just recently graduated.

It is held in the heart of Gold Coast, in Surfers Paradise and this party will go on for two weeks!

What Happens At This Party?

Many party venues become open for these young adults to dance and have fun with their friends. They even have a beach stage where the city often invites famous DJs and artists. Imagine a music festival but only for this one age group.

Aside from the parties, most of the participant rest at their overly priced hotel rooms and spend some time eating fish and chips at the sea-side cafes – hmm yum!😋 They will then finish the week sitting at the beach with their friends as the sun sets🌅.

For many people, Schoolies become one of their most memorable experiences of a lifetime.

So that is how people around my hometown will celebrate after graduting high school.

我在日本已经工作和学习六年了。
我有很多兴趣和爱好。
我喜欢旅行，去过日本的很多地方，还有英国和美国。
我喜欢做运动，比如瑜伽。
弹钢琴是我最喜欢的爱好。
我很享受学习语言，我可以说汉语，英语和日语，现在正在学习韩语和法语。我最喜欢的国家是法国，希望有机会去法国定居。

みなさんシュウホウキョクです。大連から来ました。日本で生活して勉強して６年になりました。私は趣味が沢山あります。旅行が好きで、たくさん日本の場所に行ってイギリスとアメリカもいきました。運動も好きで、例えばヨガです。
ピアノひくことが１番の趣味です。
言語を勉強することに興味を持って中国語と英語と日本語を話せます。今は韓国語とフランス語を勉強しています。１番好きな国はフランスで、機会があればフランスに住みたいです。

Its that time of the year again when Christmas rolls around. Which means lots of giving presents and eating until we are stuffed! Do you have a favourite Christmas food? In my household we have a whole roast chicken with vegetables, sage and apple stuffing and gravy. Yum!

Christmas in Japan is a lot different to where I’m from. In Australia its summer time and hot. Santa doesn’t have reindeer but kangaroos! These days people are just as happy to have a BBQ or some fresh seafood as a roast turkey or chicken. Though Australia is a secular country many people think about the origin of Christmas and go to church on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

Growing up in baking hot Australia I was so happy to spend Christmas in Japan and see snow. I don’t know if it will happen in Tokyo this year but one of my special memories of living in Japan is a white Christmas in Karuizawa. Whatever happens this year I will be looking forward to sharing presents, eating delicious food and spending time with family. It has been a rough year but I hope everyone can enjoy this season. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

Its almost the end of the year and time to wind down and prepare for 2021. Christmas time in Japan for me means spending time with my family, exchanging gifts, eating delicious food and relaxing getting ready for New Years.

Usually at Christmas we eat chicken, potatoes, gravy and vegetables. It is also tradition for after the meal to relax and watch a Christmas movie.We also enjoy putting up a Christmas tree to brighten up the living room.

Usually at New Years, It can be a good time to celebrate at a party or day out but things will be different this year as 2020 has been a tough year. What do you plan on doing for New Years? I will be having a quiet celebration with family and plan to take a nice long walk on New Years Day.

Hopefully you can have a nice year end holiday and come back refreshed for 2021. I hope everyone has a great Christmas and a very happy New Year!

Past Continuous and Past Simple

We use the past continuous to describe an action that occurred in the past that was continuous. We use the past simple to talk about an event that finished, that the action was past. Let’s look at two sentences.
・I read a book.
・I was reading a book.
The second is an example of the past continuous and is different from the simple past in that it shows we were doing something, were in the middle of something at that time. Often these two type of sentences are used to show when a change occurs,
for example;
・Bob started to cook when the guests arrived.
・Bob was cooking when the guests arrived.
This contrasts show a sequence of events and is useful in describing when past events happened. In the first the guests arrived then Bob started to cook. In the second Bob was already cooking when the guests arrived. Let’s try changing some sentences to different tenses.

Simple to continuous;
e.g. What did you do? – What were you doing?
1. I ate the cake. –
2. They played tennis all afternoon. –
3. I didn’t study earlier. –
4. Where did you go? –

Now lets describer actions that happened together using the change in tenses from past simple to past continuous or from past simple to past continuos;

e.g. read a book + fall asleep = I was reading a book when I fell asleep.
1. Study Japanese + the power went out =
2. Play football + I broke my leg =
3. Heart attack + eat a hamburger =
4. Live alone + write a novel =

Hello everyone! My name is Alex, and I’m from Canada.
Have you heard of Mississauga? It’s not a popular city, but it’s near Toronto, about 30 minutes by car. This city is famous for a big cultural festival called ‘Carassauga‘. You can see dance performances and eat food from different countries, like France, Italy, India, China, Japan, and many others. If you’re ever in Canada, come to Mississauga in the summer for Carassauga. I think you’ll love it!
I love Japanese culture, traditions, anime, and the food is fantastic! I want to work hard to learn Japanese to talk with locals and enjoy this country’s festivals. I came to Japan in April last year, but I started taking Japanese lessons 1 week ago. I look forward to learning this beautiful language, and I look forward to helping you learn English. Let’s have fun learning English together! 🙂

Singular or plural?

One way native English speakers notice a non-native speaker is when they use either a singular or a plural incorrectly. The subject of the sentence and the verb must agree with each other. So, if the subject is singular then the verb must be too. The same goes for plurals.

In the present tense, in a singular sentence the noun takes the s and the verb is plain. In a plural sentence the verb takes the s and the noun is plain.

For example;

・The dog eats the food.

・The dogs eat the food.

When we make a compound of two subjects it is always a singular;

・The dog and the cat eat the food.

The difficulty comes from when we split the subject at the verb with clauses that confuse the speaker.

For the example;

・The can of Japanese beer sit on the shelf. X

・The can of Japanese beer sits on the shelf.

This is made even more obvious when a speaker uses the wrong auxillary verb; the key here is that they always match the subject of the sentence.

For example;

・The man who makes furniture are friendly. X

・The man who makes furniture is friendly.

Lets practice, try to find all the mistakes in the paragraph below:

The dog chase the cat around the corner but the cat escape by jumping into an open window. The man in the room are watching TV and is very surprised by the cats sudden appearance. He stand and knock his food off the table. The cat, who doesn’t stop to apologize, flee for the next room. Then, the dog, who follows the cat into the window, start to eat the food.

To Gerund or not to Gerund?

In English we add “-ing” to the end of a verb, this is a gerund. We the base form of a verb after “to” to make an infinitive (also called the “to form”). In some combinations we can use both, in some just one form. Let’s try using these in sentences:

・I forgot to pay the rent. (pay)

・Steve quit smoking. (smoke)

・She started to run/running. (run)

・What would you like ________? (study)

・Is it hard ______ Japanese? (learn)

・He decided _____ on a diet. (go)

・Jimmy hated ________. (exercise)

・She had never eaten sushi but agreed _______. (try)

・The band agreed _____ the charity. (help)
