A Short Introduction to Darlington (Garry`s Hometown)

Darlington is in the county of County Durham, in northeast England. About 100,000 people live there. The town became famous during the Industrial Revolution because of trains and railways.

One important historical event is the opening of the Stockton and Darlington Railway Opening in 1825. It was the world’s first public railway to use steam trains for passengers and goods. This changed transportation around the world.

People in Darlington often enjoy:

• football (Soccer)
• shopping in the town centre
• tea and traditional British food
• parks and local markets

The weather is usually cool and rainy, especially in winter.

Happy Birthday to me!!
On Monday May 18th, I celebrated my 33rd birthday.

I decided to go on a mini luxury escape at the W hotel in Osaka, and honestly, it felt like pressing the ‘pause’ button on real life for 24 hours.

There are birthdays…and then there are birthdays with fluffy hotel
robes, room service and the kind of scent and silence that feels expensive.

The evening began exactly how all great life decisions begin: champagne, room service and pretending I was the main character in a romance movie.

Somewhere between the perfectly plated food, bubbles in a
glass and the city lights glowing outside the high-rise window, adulthood felt less about work and unpaid bills and more like soft pillows and over-sized hotel slippers.

Morning came sooner than I would’ve liked it to. Damn it. I was mildly tempted to extend my stay　forever, but I unfortunately don’t have a rich husband yet and well…my bank balance wouldn’t allow me　to stay any longer either, ha ha ha ha.

Sometimes the best celebrations are not the loudest ones. Sometimes they are quiet, luxurious and come with unlimited beverages.

“It’s time to change the clothes over to Summer,” said Akira

“Really? Do you do that every year?” asked Jim.

“Yes. At the end of April the weather always gets warmer. How about back in Canada?” asked Akira.

“I talked to my parents last week and they had fifty centimetres of snow. My Dad spent an hour blowing the snow off the sidewalk.”

“In April?” 

Jim nodded. “It was zero degrees, so Spring weather. My Mom put away her winter jacket, though.”

“I think if school started in the snow, parents would get really upset,” Akira.

“That’s right. School starts in April in Japan. It starts in September in Canada and finishes in June the next year.”

“What do the kids do during the summer?” 

“Play games. Go to camp. Watch TV.” said Jim.

“Do they do homework?” Akira asked.

“No. There’s no summer homework. Why?”

Akira groaned. “I hated summer homework when I was a student. All I ever wanted to do was play games and sleep.”

“Sounds a lot like Canadian kids,” said Jim.

Why Does Every Day Have a Name in Japan?

One of the interesting things I’ve noticed while living in Japan is that almost every day seems to have a name. Not a national holiday or anything official—just something like “Cat Day,” “Meat Day,” or, as I saw recently in my elevator, “Good Tooth Day.” At first, it felt completely random. Who decides these things? And why are there so many of them?

It turns out there’s a system behind it, and once you understand it, you start seeing it everywhere.

The idea is called 語呂合わせ (goroawase), a kind of wordplay that uses numbers to create sounds, and those sounds turn into words. Japanese numbers have multiple readings, which means a single number can be pronounced in different ways depending on the context. That flexibility allows people to combine numbers and “build” words out of dates. So when I saw that April 18 was “Good Tooth Day,” it wasn’t random at all—4 can be read as “yo,” 1 as “i,” and 8 as “ha,” which together sound like yoi ha, meaning “good teeth.” Once I realized that, everything clicked.

And then it became impossible not to notice it.

February 22 is “Cat Day” because the number 2 can sound like nyan, the Japanese version of a cat’s “meow,” so the date becomes nyan nyan nyan. The 29th of every month is “Meat Day” because 2 and 9 can be read as ni and ku, forming niku (meat). March 9 turns into “Thank You Day” because san and kyuu sound like the English phrase “thank you,” and November 22 becomes “Good Couple Day” because the numbers can be read as ii fuufu, meaning “good couple.”

What makes this especially interesting from a foreigner’s perspective is that we simply don’t have an equivalent system in English. We use puns and wordplay, of course, but numbers are rigid. “April 18” will always just be “April eighteenth.” There’s no flexibility in pronunciation, no alternate readings to play with, and no easy way to turn it into something meaningful or memorable.

Now, whenever I see a date in Japan, I automatically wonder what it might mean. Sometimes the answer is clever, sometimes it’s a bit strange, but either way, it adds a small moment of curiosity to an otherwise ordinary day.

Why is it Japanese and not Japanian?

Canadian / American / Australian. The ‘ian’ ending comes from Latin and originally meant ‘belonging to’ or connected with.

Japanese / Chinese / Vietnamese. The ‘ese’ ending comes from the Portuguese explorers, who used it when they met people in the 1500’s 

English / Spanish / Danish ending comes from Old English and was used to name people before modern English developed.

Israeli / Iraqi. The ‘i’i ending comes from languages in the Middle East and means ‘from’ or ‘belonging to’. 

Because these endings came to English over time and from different languages, English never developed a simple standard pattern.
