There’s a lot of talk about AI these days. Many people are saying that AI will change the world, give people more freedom and allow people to revolutionize their lives. However, I’m going to talk about what it’s doing to people, and what it might do to English.

 

My hobby is telling stories. I like writing and creating characters. I’ve spent countless hours designing worlds, having my heroes fight the bad guys and save the day, fall in love, get married, etc. My first stories were nowhere near as good as my current stories, and after well over a thousand hours of writing, I can confidently say that I am becoming better, but nowhere near great.

 

However, I can’t draw. So I used Chat GPT to create the characters for my stories. It did a wonderful job. The characters came to life. I published them and showed the book to my daughter, along with my stories. Her first words were ‘Why does she have three arms?’

 

I had missed that. All the time and effort that I went into writing the book. Designing the looks of the characters, setting up a book that anybody could enjoy, publishing it, but I didn’t bother to check the actual page, because I wasn’t involved in the picture creation. So I went back, fixed the prompt and printed a new page.

 

It took five minutes. It took a bit longer to fix the publication, but all of that was digital, so maybe two hours.

 

AI is making everything very easy these days, so easy that people don’t want to put in the effort necessary to become a master of their craft. I loved writing so I was willing to put in the time and effort. I did the same thing with my Japanese years ago. Studying day and night to pass the JLPT. I did it, but along the way, I lost my motivation and passion for the study. Now I can copy and paste the sentence directly into GPT and they will give me a decent translation. 

 

I don’t need to study art, and there is no reason to improve. I miss that feeling.

 

Learning something should never be easy, but at the same time, it should never be so difficult that you lose hope. AI is taking away all of the tedious middle work of learning, but also the joy of improving as well. I worry about the future and hope you can find the joy in the simple act of getting better day by day.

“So Akira, is there anything fun to do in Nara during Obon?” Jim asked. “I’ve got a week’s vacation and I’ve been saving a lot of money.”

“It’s pretty hot, but you could go to an onsen,” said Akira. “However, most of them have been booked solid for the last three months.”

“What about somewhere else?” asked Jim. “I want to be able to see the real Japan.”

“The biggest thing about this time is the Obon rush. Most families are heading home for the holidays, so the roads are packed, and don’T even get me started on the amusement parks.” Akira shivered.

“Is there anything fun to do in Obon?” Jim sighed. “You make it all sound so depressing.”

“Well, there are Bon Odori dances held across Kansai. You could check them out,” said Akira.

“Great! How do I find them?”

“Just do an internet search. Hundreds of places should pop up. People wear yukata’s, there are food stalls. It’s great fun,” said Akira.

“Anything else?” asked Jim.

“On August 16, there are massive bonfires lit in Kyoto in the shape of kanji. It marks the end of the Obon season,” said Akira.

“You mean the Daimonji!” Jim said. “I’ve heard of that.I’ve always wanted to check that out.”

“The Daimonji is in Nara city on the 15th,” said Akira. “They look similar, but they represent two separate things. Nara’s is a memorial to all the people who died in wars. It’s a symbol of world peace. I’m not sure about Kyoto’s.”

“Maybe I’ll check both out. That sounds really cool,” said Jim. “Thanks.”

“No problem,” said Akira.

Old Friends From Across The Sea: Japan and Britain

 

Japan and Britain are both Island nations, sitting at the opposite ends of the Eurasian continent, and perhaps that is why we have understood each other so well for so long. 

 

The friendship truly began in the Meiji era; though our connection stems from further back. In 1863 five young samurai from Choshu, now known as the “Choshu five”, secretly sailed to London to study at the University College London. One of them. Ito Hirobumi, later became Japan’s first Prime Minister. 

 

British Engineers helped build Japan’s first railways, lighthouses and shipyards, and a Scotsman named Thomas Blake Glover played a remarkable role in the modernisation of Japan from his home in Nagasaki. 

 

In 1902, the two countries signed an Anglo-Japanese Alliance which was Britain’s first alliance with an Asian power. It was a partnership between equals, and it shaped the early twentieth century in Asia. 

 

Sadly, the Second World War tore this friendship apart and the wounds took decades to heal. But like all true friends, we found a way through and realised the importance of what we had, and so, heal they did. From the 1980s onwards Japanese companies invested heavily in Britain, creating tens of thousands of jobs and opportunities across Europe for both parties. In fact, Nissan’s plant in Scotland became one of the most productive plants in Europe.  

 

Today, Britain has joined the CPTPP trade agreement alongside Japan, and the two countries are now building a 6th generation fighter jet together.

Two island nations, half the world apart. Yet somehow, old friends.

Hello everyone!

 

My name is Nathan and I’m from California.

I’ll be a new instructor in the Nara area.

I’m looking forward to meeting all of you this August.

One thing about myself is that I love to take pictures.

I usually take pictures of people and nature using my film camera.

Some of my favorite photos are of interesting animals I find.

I used to study plants and animals, so I have many great pictures and stories to share.

 

Thank you so much! I’m excited to speak English with you!

I’ll be at the Kintetsu Nara Nova on Sundays and Wednesdays;

“What is the best thing to do in the summer, Akira?” Jim asked.

“Stay inside under the air conditioner,” said Akira. “It’s comfortable here.”

“No, I want to go outside,” said Jim. “Are there any good summer activities?”

“Going for a walk. However, you should only go in the morning or evening,” said Akira. “The afternoon is way too hot. You could get heat stroke.”

“I already do that,” said Jim. “No. I want to experience Japanese culture.”

Akira thought for a minute. “You could go to a festival. There are many in the summer.”

“That’s a good idea. What’s the best festival to see?” asked Jim.

“I’d try the Tenjin Festival in Osaka. It’s on July 24th and 25th in Osaka. It honors Sugawara no Michizane, the god of Learning.”

“Isn’t he also one of Japan’s most dangerous ghosts?” asked Jim.

“That’s old news,” said Akira. “They pacified him. He’s a nice guy now.”

“I’ll check it out, thanks,” said Jim. “Any other suggestions? I’m looking for something to do a bit more long term.”

“Well, you could always clean your house,” said Akira. “It’s very dirty. I think the garbage moved the last time I was there.”

“Very funny,” said Jim. “I clean my house every day.”

“Really?” said Akira. “I didn’t see it.”

“What’s the best food to eat in the summer?” Jim asked.

“Shaved ice,” said Akira. “I love it with strawberry syrup.” He leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

“Thanks, Akira. I’ll give it a try,” said Jim.

“No problem. However, if you’re going to get some shaved ice, you have to get me some too,” said Akira.

“No I don’t,” said Jim.

“Fine. Then I won’t tell you the most important thing you have to do to survive a boiling hot summer in Japan,” said Akira.

“Come on, Akira. Tell me!” Jim said.

Akira smiled and shook his head. “Sorry, you had your chance.” He got up and left the room.

“”Akira!” Jim shouted.

One of my favorite activities while living in Japan is traveling to new places and prefectures that I have never been to before. It’s always exciting to go and sample all the delicious local foods, visit famous historical sites and soak in the beautiful scenery, ride the local train lines, and most of all enjoy meeting
and talking to many people we meet along the way!

So far, I have visited 23 of the 47 prefectures in Japan; we still have a ways to go before we can say we’ve been to all of them! I am looking forward to making a trip to the northern area of Japan, including Hokkaido, possibly sometime this fall. Until then, I’ll continue researching unique and interesting things to see and do, as I make plans to visit the remaining 24!

Discovering Northern England: The Angel of the North

When people think of England, they often imagine London, Big Ben, or Buckingham Palace. However, the north of England has its own unique culture, history, and famous landmarks.

People in northern England are often known for their friendliness, strong community spirit, and pride in their local traditions. The region played an important role during the Industrial Revolution, with cities such as Manchester, Liverpool, and Newcastle helping to shape modern Britain.

One of the most famous landmarks in northern England is the Angel of the North. Located near Newcastle upon Tyne, this enormous steel sculpture stands 20 metres tall with wings stretching 54 metres across—wider than a Boeing 757 aeroplane!

The Angel of the North was created by British artist Antony Gormley and was completed in 1998. It was built to celebrate the people and industrial history of the North East of England. The sculpture stands on the site of a former coal mine, reminding visitors of the region’s mining heritage.

Today, millions of people visit the Angel of the North every year. It has become a symbol of northern England and a welcoming sight for travellers arriving in the area.

If you ever visit northern England, the Angel of the North is a landmark you won’t want to miss!

Hello! It’s Marcus again. This time, I want to write about some upcoming video games that I’m interested in, releasing this year.
The first game is Star Fox, a remake of a game first released for the Nintendo 64 in 1997, originally titled Star Fox 64 in Japan and North America, but known as Lylat Wars in Europe. This game is an ‘on-rails shooter’, in that the player’s vehicle is continuously moving forward with no way to stop, as if it is on
rails, like a roller coaster. The objective of the game is to survive the onslaught of enemies on the way to the goal of each level, simultaneously destroying as many enemy units as possible. Each stage culminates in a boss battle, some of which end when the player or boss is defeated, or, in some cases, when the timer
runs out. I won’t spoil the ending, but the story revolves around Fox McCloud and his mercenary team Star Fox, consisting of himself, Falco Lombardi, Peppy Hare, and Slippy Toad. They must defend the Lylat star system from the threat of Andross, an evil scientist-turned-emperor, whose wish is to conquer
every planet in the galaxy. This mission is personal for Fox, as Andross is responsible for the mysterious disappearance of Fox’s father, James.
The remade version of this title releases for the Nintendo Switch 2 on the 25thof June 2026. Fox was actually a guest character in The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that released earlier the same year, so if you have watched that film, you may recognise him from there.

The next title that I am looking forward to in 2026 has varying titles depending on the region. In Japan, it is known as Rhythm Tengoku: Miracle Stars. In North America, it’s called Rhythm Heaven Groove.
Finally, in Europe, its name is Rhythm Paradise Groove. It is the fifth title in the series; the first was released exclusively in Japan, for Game Boy Advance and arcade machines. After this, sequels were localised and sold internationally for Nintendo DS, Wii, and 3DS. The general premise of each instalment
revolves around rhythm-based mini-games, that must be played sequentially. Players are graded at the end
of each mini-game with one of four ranks – Try Again (which is a failure), OK, Superb, and Perfect. Once a mini-game has been beaten with a score of at least OK rank, the next one will be unlocked. It’s generally a single-player experience, although there have been modes in some past games that have allowed two-
player co-operative play.

For those that have played any of the WarioWare games (or Made in Wario in Japan), this series is quite similar. The main difference is that in WarioWare, the minigames (or ‘microgames’, as they are aptly named in that series) last only a few seconds each. In the Rhythm games, each minigame is typically a
couple of minutes long.
