Hello everyone!

It’s that time of the year again for the rainy season to begin. Yes, sticky, muggy weather is heading our way. One thing to look forward to is … fireflies! Also known as lightning bugs, fireflies are easily seen in Shiga, where I live. Back home in Mexico, in the city of Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, you can visit one of several firefly sanctuaries, less than a two hour drive from Mexico City. Fireflies can be seen from the end of June to early August, so if you love bugs as much as I do you may want to consider visiting México soon.

Speaking of Mexico, I’ve been feeling great recently, partly because summer is heading our way but mostly because my big sister came to visit a couple of weeks ago. This was actually her second time in Japan. She and her husband first came back in 1984. They then visited Tokyo and she clearly remembers things being crazy expensive at the time. This time however she found most everything reasonable if not cheap. First they visited Osaka and Kyoto before coming to Shiga. They stayed three days with us. At first my wife was terrified that there wasn’t much to do and see near us. However, we ended up just talking for three days straight, almost nonstop, catching up on thirty year’s worth of family news and gossip. One wonderful souvenir she brought from Mexico was a colorful handmade table runner, with typical Mexican designs. My wife liked it so much, she decided to put it up so that it doesn’t get dirty. Looks great doesn’t it?

Staying Cool During Summer – How Do You Stay Cool?

Summer can be very hot and humid. Many people look for ways to stay cool and comfortable during the day.

Some people stay inside and use air conditioning. ❄️ Others enjoy cold drinks like iced tea or lemonade. � Eating cold foods such as watermelon � and ice cream � is also popular in summer.

In the evening, it is nice to take a walk when the weather becomes cooler. � Some people go to the beach �️ or the pool � on weekends to relax and have fun.

It is important to drink enough water during summer. � If you stay hydrated, you can enjoy the season safely.

Useful Phrases �

“It’s so hot today!”
“Let’s get something cold to drink.”
“Make sure to drink water.”
“I want to go to the beach.”

Vocabulary �

humid = 蒸し暑い
air conditioning = エアコン
lemonade = レモネード

English is all around us in Kyoto!

Greetings from Andy!

These days with all of the foreign tourists, it’s common to hear English while using public transportation.

Have you ever tried to join in on a conversation?

A few weeks ago, I was waiting for a train at Kyoto station and I heard some tourists speaking in English to each other:

Tourist 1: “Does this train go to Osaka?”

Tourist 2: “Uh, Yes, it does.”

Tourist 1: “Okay, let’s just take this one.”

Andy: “Excuse me. Are you going to Osaka?”

Tourist 1: “Yes. Is this the right train?”

Andy: “Yes, this train goes to Osaka but it’s the local train and stops at every station so it will take longer. If you wait just a few minutes for the next train, it will be an express and you can get there much faster.”

Tourist 1: “Oh thanks! Do we have to pay extra?”

Andy: “No, it’s the same price.”

Tourist 1: “Thanks so much!”

Actually, I have the same conversation with tourists at Kyoto station almost every month! Most visitors seem to really appreciate this kind of advice from locals.

If you feel nervous when English speakers ask you questions, especially in busy places like Kyoto in April. Don’t worry—you don’t need perfect English to communicate. Simple and clear answers are enough.

Here are some useful “go-to” phrases:

“Could you say that again?”→ When you didn’t catch the question
“Sorry, I don’t understand.”→ When you’re confused
“Do you mean…?”→ To check what the person is asking

If you need more time, you can say:

“Let me think for a moment.”→ A natural way to pause

If they are speaking too fast:

“I’m sorry, could you speak more slowly please.”→ A polite way to ask them to speak slower.

And if it feels too difficult, it’s okay to say:

“I’m still learning English.”→ Most people will understand and be patient

Remember, communication is more important than being perfect. Even short answers and simple phrases can help you have a good conversation.

Student email-Mystery tree story

Hello everyone!

I had an interesting conversation with my parents the other day.

When I was very young, my family moved into a house that has a large garden. This is the same house as my parents live in now, 24 years later.

The garden has a large fruit tree at the bottom of the garden, that blossoms every year. It’s flowers are beautiful, and slightly pink so we always thought that it was a kind of Cherry tree. We could never confirm that though, because birds would ALWAYS eat the fruit, before we could see them! It was frustrating!

There are many kinds of birds that come and eat the fruit! Crows, Jackdaws, Blackbirds, Starlings, and more! No wonder we didn’t see them!

This year, though, the birds didn’t come! So my parents could see the fruit for the first time since we moved into the house!

It’s a PLUM tree!

Everyone was surprised to find it out.
