Hello everyone!

It’s that time of the year again for the rainy season to begin. Yes, sticky, muggy weather is heading our way. One thing to look forward to is … fireflies! Also known as lightning bugs, fireflies are easily seen in Shiga, where I live. Back home in Mexico, in the city of Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala, you can visit one of several firefly sanctuaries, less than a two hour drive from Mexico City. Fireflies can be seen from the end of June to early August, so if you love bugs as much as I do you may want to consider visiting México soon.

Speaking of Mexico, I’ve been feeling great recently, partly because summer is heading our way but mostly because my big sister came to visit a couple of weeks ago. This was actually her second time in Japan. She and her husband first came back in 1984. They then visited Tokyo and she clearly remembers things being crazy expensive at the time. This time however she found most everything reasonable if not cheap. First they visited Osaka and Kyoto before coming to Shiga. They stayed three days with us. At first my wife was terrified that there wasn’t much to do and see near us. However, we ended up just talking for three days straight, almost nonstop, catching up on thirty year’s worth of family news and gossip. One wonderful souvenir she brought from Mexico was a colorful handmade table runner, with typical Mexican designs. My wife liked it so much, she decided to put it up so that it doesn’t get dirty. Looks great doesn’t it?

Enjoying Summer Festivals 👘✨

Summer in Japan is full of exciting festivals! 
Many people wear yukata, enjoy delicious food, and watch beautiful fireworks.
These festivals are a great way to spend time with family and friends. 😊

One popular summer activity is eating festival food. 🍢
People enjoy takoyaki, yakisoba, and kakigori. 🍧
Kakigori is shaved ice (or a ‘snow cone’) with sweet syrup, and it is perfect for hot weather ☀️

Another fun part of summer festivals is the fireworks display 🎇
Fireworks light up the night sky with many colors.
Everyone looks up and says, “Wow!” ✨

If you visit a summer festival in Japan, you can experience traditional culture and make wonderful memories!

English is all around us in Kyoto!

Greetings from Andy!

These days with all of the foreign tourists, it’s common to hear English while using public transportation.
Have you ever tried to join in on a conversation?

A few weeks ago, I was waiting for a train at Kyoto station and I heard some tourists speaking in English to each other:

Tourist 1👩: “Does this train go to Osaka?”
Tourist 2👨: “Uh, Yes, it does.”
👩: “Okay, let’s just take this one.”

Andy: “Excuse me.  Are you going to Osaka?”

👩: “Yes. Is this the right train?”

Andy: “Yes, this train goes to Osaka but it’s the local train and stops at every station so it will take longer. If you wait just a few minutes for the next train, it will be an express and you can get there much faster.”

👩: “Oh thanks!  Do we have to pay extra?”

Andy: “No, it’s the same price.”

👩: “Thanks so much!”

Actually, I have the same conversation with tourists at Kyoto station almost every month! Most visitors seem to really appreciate this kind of advice from locals.

🌸 Spring Is Finally Here!

Spring is in the air! The days are getting warmer, flowers are blooming, and it’s the perfect time to refresh your English skills.

Have you noticed how people talk about the weather in English? It’s one of the easiest ways to start a conversation.

Here are a few useful phrases:

• “It’s getting(warmer) lately.”
• “What a lovely day!” (In the UK, ‘lovely’ is often used for ‘nice’, ‘great’, or even ‘delicious’, e.g. “This cake is lovely”)

Talking about the weather may seem simple, but it’s a great way to build confidence and connect with others.

This season, try starting a conversation with someone using one of these phrases. You might be surprised how naturally the conversation flows!

I was talking to some instructors about Easter which was in March. Here’s what they told me. Easter is a holiday celebrated in many countries around the world. It is a Christian holiday that celebrates new life and hope. Many people enjoy Easter traditions such as decorating eggs, eating chocolate, and spending time with family. In some countries, children look for hidden eggs in a fun activity called an “Easter egg hunt.” The Easter Bunny is also a popular symbol—it is a character that brings eggs and treats to children. Even if you don’t celebrate Easter, it is a great topic to learn new English words and phrases!

① “Spring is in the air”

Meaning: It feels like spring (warmer weather, flowers, fresh feeling).

Example: The flowers are blooming-spring is in the air!

② “Sweet treat”

Meaning: Something sugary and delicious (like chocolate or candy).

Example: I got lots of sweet treats for Easter.

③ “New beginnings”

Meaning: A fresh start or a new chapter in life.

Example: Easter is a time for new beginnings.

I would love to try some Easter sweat treats! Chocolate eggs must be tasty.

Here are some useful English words and phrases you can try this week:

1.“The cherry blossoms are in full bloom.”

Example: The cherry blossoms are in full bloom this week.

2.“My go-to snack for hanami is …”

Go-to means something you choose often because it is easy, reliable, or your favorite.

Example:
My go-to snack for hanami is onigiri.
My go-to drink is green tea.

Try using one of these phrases in your next lesson. Even one new phrase can help you improve step by step ✨

みなさんは「Midwest Goodbye」という言葉を聞いたことがありましたか？

これはアメリカ中西部でよくある、ちょっと面白い文化を表す言葉です。
「もう帰るね！」と言ってドアまで行ったのに、そこでまた話が始まってしまい、気づいたら30分以上おしゃべりしている…というような状況のことです。

日本語だと「玄関先で話し込む」や「立ち話が長くなる」という感じが少し近いかもしれませんね。
