Something that has come up time and time again since I moved to Japan, and since I’m American, is the question of what’s the best place to visit if you ever visit the United States.

The usual destinations that I often hear Japanese people mention wanting to visit are the big cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, or New York City. Or sometimes it’s a very specific place or park like Disneyland or the Grand Canyon. These are all great places that you should definitely go to if you can, especially if you’re short on time. However, visiting them is kind of similar to how many Americans and other tourists will only visit Tokyo and Kyoto and never consider anywhere else.

First of all, I definitely think California is a great first destination – if only for the weather. But if you have the luxury of traveling to the U.S. and have at least 3 or 4 days of your trip that you can spare (ideally a week but you can make 3 or 4 work), I highly recommend getting your international driving permit and renting a car! Going on a road trip is one of the most iconic vacation activities that you can do in the U.S. Still stop in some of the famous areas, but doing it by driving and also stopping at some off-the-beaten-path places will make your trip so much more memorable!
