先週のブログではGermaine先生のほのぼのストーリーが無くて
さみしいというお声をいただきました😓

そんなGermaine先生、実は休暇をいただいて
東京にお出かけしていたのです🎵
今回はそのときの旅日記を公開致します✨

Tokyo Trip
On June 3rd, I went on a trip to Tokyo with my family. They all came over from Georgia to see me my mom, sister, and three other friends came to visit. We went to Shibuya, Shinjuku, and even Hakone.
During the first two days, we went to Shibuya and spent way too much money there. We bought almost $600 worth of things, and I was really nervous about how quickly they were spending. It was mostly my sister who spent the most, wanting to get clothes for her dog that ended up costing about \16,000.
We also walked around Shinjuku and went to karaoke, which was really fun. Since I was the only one who spoke Japanese, I had to do most of the translating. Luckily, a lot of the people there knew a bit of English, so it made my job easier.
One of the main things that was difficult for me was finding places to eat. My family are all picky eaters they don’t like to try things they’re not used to. I tried to get them to try different Japanese foods, but since most of the dishes were high in sodium or had pork in them, they couldn’t really eat much. We mostly ate yakitori, some ramen, English-style food, or sweets.
We went to Hakone to take pictures of Mt. Fuji, but sadly, it was covered by fog and we couldn’t really see it. However, we had some really good unagi there, which they surprisingly liked.
It was fun to see them, even if they added a few more gray hairs to my head. I can’t wait for them to come back or until I’m able to go see them again in the future.

夏本番はまだ先ですが、
Germaine先生は早くも「蚊に刺された！」と騒いでおります🦟

そんなGermaine先生は小さい頃から虫やら動物が大好き🦗🐝🐞
ちょっと笑える子供の頃の思い出を教えてくれました🙋‍♀️

Animals and Bug Love

Growing up, I’ve always been a bit of a weird kid compared to others. One thing that set me apart was my fascination with animals and bugs. I was always interested in catching reptiles, and insects. My mother always hated when I brought them home.
In school, from elementary through sixth grade, we had something called “Show and Tell.” The kids would bring something of interest or value to them, show it to the class, and talk about it. Two of my favorite memories from that time involve animals and bugs I had found.
The first one was in fourth grade. Near my grandmother’s house, there was a small creek that I knew had tons of frogs. I went there often and tried to see how many I could catch. One day, I decided that would be the day to show off my frog catching skills. I grabbed a small fish tank, ran down to the creek, and caught what felt like a full tank of frogs. At the time, I thought I had filled the whole tank, but looking back, it was probably only 20–25 small frogs. I took them to school and showed them to the class most of the boys were amazed, and some of the girls were disgusted. Unfortunately, I accidentally dropped the tank, and all the frogs spilled out in the classroom. It was a mess! I did get to show off my catching skills again while chasing them, but after that, animals were banned from school.
The second time was in sixth grade. I was out in the woods and found a Hercules beetle, which seemed huge to me at the time. I brought it to school, and luckily, nothing like last time happened. I just showed it off and released it afterward.
Even now, I still enjoy observing and finding animals. I tend to come across a lot of interesting bugs like spiders (my favorite), dragonflies, and even mice and birds around Aomori. Whenever I go out walking, I’m always on the lookout for insects and animals.

この１週間は夏を感じさせるような暑い日もありましたね🌞💦
朝晩は冷え込むこともあり体調管理が難しいですが

先週のブログでGermaine先生が
GWはギターを弾いて過ごしたと教えてくれたので
趣味のギターについて聞いてみました👂

Guitar

One of my hobbies for the past 17 years is playing the guitar. I love music, in middle school my father got me an old, beat-up guitar, and I decided that I wanted to learn how to play it instead.
The first song I learned on the guitar, though, was “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. The opening verse and chord melody were fun, but eventually, I wanted to learn something more complex. Over the years, I learned “Stairway to Heaven” and picked up flamenco guitar playing from a friend’s family member.
When I got my first electric guitar I started learning more Japanese songs, starting with “Driver’s High” by L’Arc-en-Ciel, Maximum the Hormone  “Koi Mega Lover” and “What’s Up, People.” Even songs like “Panic Attack” by Dream Theater and “Thunder Horse” by Dethklok.
Someone from my old job  gave me is old guitar for $20. It smelled, had dents, and the strings were broken, but I was happy. I started learning more flamenco guitar and fingerstyle guitar. I soon discovered an old Japanese guitarist on YouTube named Okazaki Rinten (岡崎倫典), and I fell in love with his version of Matsuda Seiko (松田聖子） “Sweet Memories”. This sparked my interest in old Japanese artists from the ’70s and ’80s. I wanted to come to japan to be able to learn more guitar songs and even one day play one of my songs in Japanese.

Golden Week

During Golden Week, I was lucky enough to have quite a long break. I spent most of it resting and sleeping, which I really needed. On other days, I did a lot of walking and explored the area around me.
One of my favorite places I walked to was Sakuragawa—a stretch of road lined with beautiful sakura trees. Seeing the sakura petals falling along the road felt like something out of a movie. I tried to take as many pictures as I could of the trees and the falling petals, though I probably looked a bit odd to the people passing by.
Another place I walked to was Ushidate. It turned into a three-hour walk, but it was incredibly beautiful and relaxing. I spent most of the time playing my guitar while walking and enjoying the scenery.
Besides all that, I mainly spent my free time walking short distances, playing my guitar, or sleeping—which was really nice and refreshing for me.

そろそろ見納めの桜ですが、みなさまお花見には行かれましたか🌸
Germaine先生は初めての弘前の桜を満喫してきたようです✨

Hirosaki Park Sakura

This week, I went to see the sakura at Hirosaki Park. It was something that I must say is worth the trip to go and see. The event and the cherry blossoms were an extraordinary sight. I was even able to try konnyaku for the first time there. I wasn’t able to get much of the flavor, but the jelly-like snack was fun to eat—well, until I took a big bite and burned the roof of my mouth and my tongue.
I also took the time to try some of the sakura-themed mochi that was there, and I almost became addicted to the flavor. But walking around, I really had a lovely time seeing the trees. In Georgia, we have some smaller, similar-looking trees, but none as lovely and big as the ones here in Japan.
The only thing about that day that I didn’t like was the nonstop walking and standing I did the entire day. I got to Hirosaki around 11 AM and didn’t leave until around 3:30 PM, walking the entire time. The trains were packed both coming and going, and it was really difficult for me to find a comfortable position on the train. I ended up standing in front of some people, making them a bit uncomfortable, which I do feel sorry about.
But I hope you get the chance to go. I took a lot of beautiful pictures while I was there—well, I tried to, but since there were so many people, it was kind of hard to stop and get some good ones. I hope you like the ones I have.

さて、毎週恒例のGermaine先生のつぶやきは、、、

Heights

One thing about my family that people tend to be really surprised by is our height differences. I’m 6’5″ (198 cm), my brother is 6’6″ (201 cm), my sister is 6’0″ (182 cm), and most of my family on my dad’s side is quite tall, with many being at least 5’7″ (170 cm). We got most of our size from my father’s side of the family because my grandfather was almost 7 feet (213 cm) tall in his younger days, though now he’s about the same height as me and my brother. He ended up having around 13 kids—8 sons and 5 daughters—with my grandmother, with most of them being at least 5’7″ (170 cm), and the tallest being my brother at 6’6″.

One thing I’ve also started to realize is that there are a lot of really tall people here in America, and I usually feel like my family and I are almost average in height compared to the sea of tall people I’ve seen. The tallest person I’ve seen was about 7’3″ (223 cm) tall.

The thing about being tall is that it can cause issues with your knees and back. The added height and weight can put a strain on your legs, often leading to arthritis in the knees and back. Despite these challenges, it’s still fun to be able to reach things that weren’t meant to be touched, or even help others reach things they can’t get themselves. But sometimes it can be difficult to find clothes, shoes, or even vehicles that can fit you. Luckily, some American cars are made with that in mind, but I still find myself having difficulty fitting into a lot of the vehicles I owned back home. Now, in Japan, I notice that the cars tend to be a bit smaller, making owning a car here feel like a pipe dream for me.

It’s fun being tall, even with its difficulties, and I can’t wait to see how tall my nephews and future children will become..

Hair
One thing that will always stress me out about being here in Japan is what to do with my hair. Being Black in a country with few Black people outside of major city areas means that there are little to no places with experience in cutting Black hair. I’ve looked for different places and talked to different people about getting my hair cut, but the main issue always ends with them not having the experience and being afraid of messing my hair up while cutting it. I tried going to a place once, and they did an alright job, but it didn’t really turn out to the natural style I usually like. The only thing left to do is learn how to cut my own hair and beard, which I’m really afraid of doing. The last time I tried, I ended up completely bald. I’ve gotten a little better at cutting it short, but lining my hair up has been very nerve-wracking for me. Well, all I’ve got is time, and it’s better to learn now than never, I guess.

イースター月間スタートのお知らせを致しました🎵
今回はGermaine先生にアメリカでのイースターについて
教えてもらいました(∩^o^)⊃━☆

Easter In America

Easter in America is mainly a children’s holiday. We tend to go all out and make it a whole day for the Egg Hunt event. A few days before Easter, stores start selling dye, lots of eggs, stuffed bunnies, and Easter chocolates. Some people decorate their entire houses with Easter themes, but mostly, people hold Egg Hunt events in their yard or house.
On Easter day, families get together, boil a bunch of eggs, and then dye them different colors. Depending on the size of the family, they might dye about 15 to 20 eggs, or more if it’s a larger event. After everyone finishes dyeing the eggs, the kids are told to go into a room while the adults hide the eggs around the house and yard. Once the eggs are hidden, the kids have about 30 minutes to an hour to find them. Afterward, they count the eggs and give out prizes to whoever finds the most or just let the kids eat what they’ve found.
