Halloween (邦題:ハロウィン)
Year of release: 1978
Director: John Carpenter

Was there ever a chance of it being anything else other than John
Carpenter’s Halloween? It has almost become mandatory for people to pop
in a dvd of Halloween, while the children are out trick or treating, on those
cold October 31st evenings. Halloween is a slasher movie in the truest
sense. A crazy masked man with a kitchen knife stalks suburban teenagers
(including a young Jamie Lee Curtis in her star making signature role) on
Halloween evening. Its story is simple. Its execution is perfect. The movie is
eerily quiet with very little, if any, special effects. Made on a shoestring
budget, the financial constraints works in favour of the movie and gives it a
very raw, straightforward and an almost calming feel. But, most importantly,
it doesn’t allow the movie to be bothered by unnecessary side plots or
characters. Halloween is a very efficient movie, and director John Carpenter
guides the movie along at a very brisk pace. Not a single shot feels wasted
here. For that reason, it ends up being a very entertaining film. But, it’s also a
film that knows how to scare its audience. There isn’t much blood here, but
what it lacks in gore, it makes up for in pure suspense and tension. Much of
the movie is just shadows and light with people jumping out and a simple
but killer (pun intended) score – but who said you needed so much to scare
people while also making an entertaining film? The (many) Halloween
sequels have tried to do bigger things with more money, but they all lack the
terrifying simplicity of John Carpenter’s original (although the 2018
Halloween film – which was marketed as a reboot, but is actually a direct
sequel to the original – is actually pretty good and easily the best Halloween
sequel). This movie is made up of simple ingredients, but the end result is
one that cannot be bested, especially at this time of year!!

The Exorcist (邦題:エクソシスト)
Year of release: 1973
Director: William Friedkin

Just missing out on the top spot is what is probably out-and-out the scariest
movie on this list – William Friedkin’s 1973 horror classic The Exorcist. This
movie is just dreadfully scary. There’s no other way of putting it. It should
make any top horror movie list just for how scary it is alone. But on top of
that, The Exorcist is a masterfully directed, shot, staged and performed piece
of cinema. The movie moves at a sombre pace, and the heavy sense of
dread that permeates the film make it a fascinating yet somewhat
uncomfortable watch (there were reported adverse physical reactions during
initial screenings of the film in ’73, such as vomiting and even heart attacks!).
The acting is universally terrific within the film, especially from Ellen Burstyn
and Linda Blair who play the mother and the possessed daughter
respectively (both would ultimately be nominated for Academy Awards each).
It was the first horror film to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best
Picture and it’s place within our pop-culture, and the discourse surrounding
the film – thanks in large part to its controversial depiction of catholicism –
remain unshaken.

Scream (邦題:スクリーム)
Year of release: 1996
Director: Wes Craven

Over a decade after he perfected the teen slasher with A Nightmare on Elm
Street, Wes Craven again returned to the genre in 1996 and gave it another
masterpiece – Scream. But whereas Elm Street was a slasher that set, or
reinstated, the framework for what to expect in a teen slasher, Scream took it
apart, or, more accurately, pointed at the framework and made fun of it. It
was self-referential in a time before meta-humour became popular. And it
was all the more ironic since Wes Craven, a man who helped build those
cliches, was the one to shake them up. Craven worked here from a script
written by Kevin Williamson (famed for writing teen-oriented drama series’
such as Dawson’s Creek or The Vampire Diaries), and created what is now
considered the quintessential teen slasher. It’s very funny, very clever and
very bloody, and it features a well-rounded cast (again of mostly younger
actors) who have great chemistry together. It isn’t as weird as Elm Street,
and the violent scenes, where the young cast members inevitably get killed
off one by one, aren’t as inventive as Craven’s 1984 masterpiece, but that’s
because Scream does focus more on the characters and it allows time for
the story to breath more, which is why I’m placing it ahead of Elm Street. It’s
a more focused film, with a stronger sense of character and a witty script
from Kevin Williamson…. though it does threaten to become too infatuated
with its own meta-humour at times, Craven does manage to keep it in line.

A Nightmare on Elm Street (邦題:エルム街の悪夢)
Year of release: 1984
Director: Wes Craven

We’ve now reached the true classics of Halloween movie marathons; the
undisputed kings of October 31st night-ins. The late Wes Craven is a true
horror legend, and A Nightmare on Elm Street is still his masterpiece for
many. He perfected the teen-slasher with this movie, and the modern slasher
movie owes a lot to what Craven did here. Not only is the movie a roller
coaster ride that is deliriously entertaining and wildly imaginative, it also
delivers the scares with a hefty amount of gore while also sneaking in some
clever allegories on teenage promiscuity. Elm Street is a strange movie, but
the weirdness does work in its favour; for large parts, it does give off the vibe
of a fever dream. The excellent cast – mostly comprised of younger actors
(including a young Johnny Depp in his feature film debut) – are just the right
amount of serious and silly to match the movie’s bizarre tone. You can enjoy
it as a fun John Hughes-esque 80s high-school movie, but also, for those
horror lovers out there, Elm Street still delivers the scares – and its scariest
(and bloodiest) moments are not easily forgotten!

Trick ‘r Treat (邦題:ブライアン・シンガーのトリック・オア・トリート)
Year of release: 2007
Director: Michael Dougherty

Tick ‘r Treat is a pure Halloween movie. It’s designed to be watched on
Halloween nights – much like Home Alone’s relationship with the Christmas
season. No Halloween watchlist would be complete without this modern
classic now. In spite of all this, Trick ‘r Treat does remain largely under
appreciated and it remains a movie that is not widely seen. It’s genuinely
terrifying at times, but also surprisingly funny. The movie is an anthology
movie comprised of four stories that are all linked through the creepy and
mysterious central character. This is a movie born out of love for the
Halloween season, and out of love for scary stories – for that reason, its
scary elements are executed to perfection and the whole movie is
punctuated with a surprising amount of detail. If there’s any movie on this list
that I implore people to see this Halloween season, it would be this one!
Partly because it’s under appreciated, but also because it’s the most
“Halloween” Halloween movie on this list.
