今回は、ニュースで話題持ちきりのアメリカ大統領選挙🗽について
アメリカ人講師のMichelleに聞いてみました！

The United States political system is dominated by two major parties.
The Republicans who are generally a conservative party, and the Democrats, a more liberal party.
The candidates for President this year are Donald Trump for the Republicans and Joe Biden for the Democrats.
Since Trump is the president now, we say he is the incumbent, and Biden is the challenger.
In some countries, the winner is decided by whoever gets the most votes. In this case we say the popular vote winner.
But in the United States we decide state by state in a kind of mini election x 50.
Each state has a number of votes called electoral votes, which is depending on the size of the population.
California for example, which has the largest population, has 55 electoral votes.
Each citizen of the United States can vote in their state.
Whoever gets the most votes in a state, wins the electoral votes of that state.
Whoever gets at least 270 of the 538 electoral votes is the president.
The rules of voting depend state by state, but generally you can vote in three different ways.
You can vote by mail, you can vote before election day in person, and you can vote on election day in person.
This election, due to COVID-19, there were so many votes by mail.
They take longer to count and depending on the rules of the state, some states were not able to count them before Election Day,
therefore we are waiting a long time to know who will be the winner.
Either way, the new president is not sworn in until January 20 at noon.
The 2 1/2 months between election day and inauguration day allow a transition to take place.

・challenger→挑戦者
・electoral votes→選挙人投票
・popular vote→人気投票
・inauguration day→大統領就任式
