It’s starting to get colder, the leaves are changing colour and we’re beginning to see more Autumn foods in the supermarket. Japan has a lot of great Autumn food, but I’ve talked to many students who aren’t sure about the words in English. So, today I want to talk about some of my favourite things to eat in Autumn.
I recently bought some figs, I’ve been eating them since I was a kid, my family would buy some from the market every year. I’m always surprised to hear that quite a few people don’t like them… Maybe they don’t like the strange texture of the inside?
Fig :いちじく
I honestly didn’t eat that many chestnuts in Australia, I mostly remember hearing about them in Christmas songs as a kid, “chestnuts roasting on an open fire”. I’ve really been enjoying eating them in Japan though, especially when they’re cooked into rice.
Chestnut : 栗
I would sometimes see a very small section of persimmons in the supermarket in Australia, they weren’t very popular down there. The other NOVA instructors I’ve talked to say they don’t like them and that they’re pretty bland. They’re maybe not the most exciting fruit but I like them.
Persimmon :柿
