Trip to Kansai

A university friend came to visit Japan from the UK recently. It was his first time in Japan and his first time in Asia, so it was my turn to play the role of tour guide.
As a UK native, my friend obviously loves football, so after picking him up from the airport and resting for a few hours, we headed to Saitama stadium to watch Urawa Reds vs Ganba Osaka. The atmosphere was incredible and we really didn’t expect it. It felt like watching a game in Europe. We both left feeling really impressed with the intensity and volume of the fans there.
The next day we headed to Kansai. First stop was Osaka for three days. We did the standard tourist itinerary: Dotonbori, USJ and Osaka Castle. It was a great time, but I’m not the biggest fan of crowded places, so, next time I want to find quieter and more local places in Osaka, and avoid the crowds as much as I can.
After Osaka, we headed to Kyoto for four days, visiting many temples, watching a Maiko (舞妓) performance, and hiking around Fushimi Inari (伏見稲荷大社) at midnight, which for me was the highlight of the trip as we saw many wild boar (イノシシ), something I hadn’t seen in japan before and something I didn’t expect to see so close to Kyoto city.
From Kyoto we did day trips to Nara and Kobe. Kobe was a city I had no expectations about, but the calm and relaxed atmosphere, great food and great city view from Mt Rokko (六甲山) meant it was another highlight of the trip for me.
After our week-long trip in Kansai we headed back to Tokyo, and my friend enjoyed Kanto as much as he could before heading back to the UK to sort through his 3000 photos of Japan, in my opinion I didn’t think it was possible to take this many photos in 10 days, but somehow he managed it, it was probably the most impressive thing I witnessed since moving to Japan.

Hi there!

My name is Harrison and I am from England.

I was born in the English Countryside in a place called Devon, but from 2016 to 2023 lived in a city called Bristol before I moved to Tokyo.

Being English, I love all kinds of sports, football, boxing, rugby, cricket I love them all! I think England is a beautiful country and have travelled all over it so if you have any questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

I am still very new in Japan but have had a fantastic time exploring Tokyo and am always looking for new places to visit – so please give me recommendations!
I also love ramen – every kind! So if you know any good ramen shops, I would love to hear about them too.

My spring trip went to the beautiful Kamakura! It was very convenient to get there by train, so it is perfect for everyone who is looking for a quick nature break. I went there together with a japanese friend, who was born close to Kamakura. First we went to a forest where there was quite a lot of bamboo. We stopped at the nearby Hokokuji temple. We then made our way to the city and strolled through the Komachi Dori street, where we looked at many small shops with a lot of sweets and small souvenirs.

We ate some soba noodles, which were very tasty! My friend said that Kamakura is also famous for shirasu, since it is close to the sea. But since I do not like seafood that much, I did not follow her recommendation. Right as the sun set, we arrived at the great Buddha and I snapped a wonderful picture. It was a great trip and it will be a wonderful memory.

 

Meine erste Reise im Frühling ging nach Kamakura. Es ist nicht weit von Tokio entfernt und eignet sich daher perfekt für alle, die eine kleine Pause in der Natur suchen. Ich ging zusammen mit einer Freundin dorthin, die in der Nähe von Kamakura aufgewachsen ist. Zuerst gingen wir in einen nahegelegenen Bambuswald. Wir machten einen kurzen Stopp am Hokokuji Tempel. Danach machten wir uns au in Richtung der Stadt und schlenderten durch die Komachi Dori Strasse, wo wir viele kleine Läden anschauten, in denen es Süßigkeiten und Souvenirs gab.

Wir haben Soba gegessen und es war sehr lecker! Die Freundin sagte, dass Shirasu in Kamakura berühmt ist, weil die Stadt nahe am Meer liegt. Aber da ich keine Meeresfrüchte mag, habe ich diese Empfehlung dankend abgelehnt. Genau als die Sonne unterging, sind wir an der großen Buddhastatue angekommen und ich habe eine schönes Bild gemacht. Es war ein toller Ausflug und es wird eine großartige Erinnerung sein.

My first trip of the Spring season was quite a lucky one. Warm weather and clear skies made for great photos, lovely scenery and an infectiously happy atmosphere that seemed to emanate from every person we passed by.
First stop was Kanegawa, taking the train to Fujisawa before boarding the Enoden to Enoshima station, followed by a short walk over the bridge to Enoshima. We ate taco senbei(great), shirasu don(undecided), and walked to the Enoshima Sea Candle (lighthouse) for a beautiful panoramic view of Kanegawa.
Next stop was Hase station to see the Daibutsu, and then to Kamakura to visit the walking street and Hachimangu shrine. We ate mochi, dango, and everything else we saw, it`s crowded enough on weekdays, so I can`t imagine how it is during the weekend.
After finishing up in the Kamakura area we went straight to Yokohama to visit Chinatown, ate nikuman, a lot of Taiwanese fried chicken and strawberries covered in syrup. We all then drove to Haneda to pick up our friend from the airport, he was arriving from Thailand. We met him with a cute, pink `Welcome to Japan` sign to embarass him as much as possible and judging from his face, I`d say we were successful.
After spending the night in Tokyo, we woke up at 7am and set off to Yamanashi prefecture. The views of Mt Fuji along the route were fantastic, and upon arriving in Yamanashi, we headed to Kawaguchiko for an even better view of the mountain.
Next, it was off to Oshino Hakkai for an even better view (I didn`t think this was possible) of Mt. Fuji, to try alot of street food, and to enjoy the Koi and trout ponds. While it is a touristy place, the food was excellent and the scenery was phenomenal, so it`s still worth a trip. Chureito Pagoda was the final destination of the day, enjoying a view of the pagoda set against the backdrop of the entire town and mountain, the spot of one of the most famous and iconic photos of Japan.
After returning back to the hostel, we drank a beer and watched the sunset from the rooftop, then headed to an Izakaya to try raw chicken for the first time. To be honest, I was quite scared to try it, but after finding some courage (three glasses of umeshu), I have to admit it was really good. A few more umeshus later and we were back at the hostel to prepare for bed.
The next day, after eating a picnic at Oishi Park, I returned home on the train to prepare for work, and my friends headed off to Hakone. Hopefully my second spring trip will be as fortunate as this one, and hopefully I`ll only need one glass of umeshu before trying raw chicken next time.

I was lucky enough to travel to the northern part of Kyushu recently, and I was pleasantly surprised. Many students told me that I should check out the food stalls in Fukuoka, the hamburger shops in Sasebo, and the churches, museums, and Glover Park in Nagasaki city, but what about Saga? Not many people seem to visit Saga Prefecture, and I’m wondering why that is.

I ended up renting a car and driving to Saga during my stay in Kyushu, and I’m glad I did. I drove to Yoshinogari first. It was such an interesting place with so many ruins from Japan’s Yayoi period. A number of Yayoi period houses and towers have been reconstructed in this area. I’m not sure exactly how many of these buildings have been rebuilt, but my guess is around 30. There’s also a burial mound that you can enter and see where kings were once buried. I was so impressed with Yoshinogari that I think it might be one of the top 5 ancient sites I’ve seen so far in Japan.

My second and final stop in Saga was Arita. The fact that it’s the first place in Japan to produce porcelain dishes is pretty neat. The hand-made dishes were so interesting, and the designs each dish had made them look museum quality. Just walking up and down the main street in Arita and looking at the variety of dishes in each shop there was so much fun. There’s also a unique shrine in Arita that has a porcelain shrine gate, as well as a porcelain komainu. If you have any interest in hand-made pottery or intricate designs, then I definitely recommend stopping by this town.

Saga is a quiet prefecture filled with some really interesting places. I hope that more people can check out this hidden gem in Japan.
