日本では3月と言えば、ひな祭りがメジャーな
シーズンイベントですよね！🌸

海外では、St.Patrick’s Day(聖パトリックの祝日)が
3月17日に祝われています🎉
日本ではまだまだ親しみのないこのイベントが一体どんな日
なのか、英語講師のKennethに聞いてみました🎤

Every March 17th, we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day🍀.
It was originally a religious holiday remembering
Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.
Now it is widely celebrated as a festival of Irish culture.

St.Patrick’s Day is celebrated with parades and parties
with lots of drinking.
But the most unique part is the color green: everyone
and everything is green!
People wear green clothes👕, eat green food🍴 and
even drink green beer🍺.
In Chicago, they even dye the river green!
In America, there’s a tradition that you can pinch anyone
not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. That’s because
Leprechauns, Irish fairies, like to pinch people, but can’t see
you if you wear green. So if you visit America on March 17th,
make sure you wear green!

日本ではまだ馴染みのないこの聖パトリックの祝日ですが、
是非今年の3月17日は緑色の服を身にまとってみては？😊

My favorite place in Japan is my home in Saitama.

Actually, I haven’t visited so many places in Japan, but my most memorable travel experience was my trip to Hiroshima a few years ago.

The atomic bomb dome, Peace park and Memorial museum were all breathtaking and left a lasting impression on me.

I stayed for 3 days in Hiroshima.

I spent one day visiting the picturesque Itsukushima Shrine. It was a very beautiful place.

I ate Hiroshima Okonomiyaki 4 times.

That also made it a very memorable travel experience for me.

そこで今回は、どのようにレッスンが進められているのか
ご紹介したいとおもいます(*’ω’*)

This is what we do in a kids lesson.

We start with a greeting at the door.
“Hello, how are you?”
We then review last week’s lesson and check
homework together.
Sometimes, usually with younger children,
we sing the “Hello Song” and the “Days of the Week” song
and  also “Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes”.

In the book we have a look at a short conversation and
then memorize a new phrase and response,
along with 5 new words.
We do activities to memorize these and then there’s a
listening practice, writing practice followed by a phonics
section.

When this is done we’ll play some games if there’s time,
utilizing today’s new vocabulary.
Then the bell goes, and the lesson ends.

挨拶に歌を交えるので、お子様もリラックスして
楽しみながらレッスンがはじまります🎵
しっかり前回の復習と宿題の確認をするので、
より理解が深まりますね🌟
また、リスニングとライティングどちらもカバーできる
レッスンとなっています(^^♪
最後には、レッスンで学んだ単語やフレーズを用いて
ゲームをするので、楽しく学べます💕

Valentines Day is today!

I’ve learned from reading lots of Shoujo Manga, that Valentines Day in Japan is different from America.

In America, usually the man is giving the gift to the woman, or the couple equally exchanges gifts.

Also, there is no White Day.

It’s actually very common for men not to receive anything at all!

One thing Japan and America have in common is… we all love chocolate!

今日はだいぶ暖かいようですが、そうは言ってもまだ２月。朝晩は冷えますね。

そんな中、今度の休みは南国リゾートに旅行に行きたいな・・・とお考えの皆さま、必見です！！

本日はオーストラリア出身の講師、Mattがオーストラリアのおすすめの場所について話してくれました😄

Before I came to Japan I used to live in Cairns in the north of Australia. Cairns is in the tropical part of Australia which means there is lots of lush greenery, warm weather and tropical downpours in the rainy season.

There are lots of things to do and see in and around Cairns. Most people take the scenic train to the nearby town of Kuranda, where they can buy local arts and crafts, see some wildlife, hold a koala and enjoy a delicious meat pie. Then they can take the Skyrail cable car through the rainforest and stop off at Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park to experience indigenous culture and cuisine.

About 45 minutes from Cairns by boat is Green Island. Here you can relax on a tropical beach, go swimming or snorkelling or if you are adventurous try scuba diving. Another great activity to do while you are in Cairns is go on a river cruise in the Daintree Rainforest and look for crocodiles!

My favorite place though is Mossman Gorge, about an hour and a half from Cairns by car or bus. Mossman Gorge has a river with beautiful clear pools of water and huge boulders. There is a walking trail through the rainforest where you can hear the sounds of the bush, the water, wind, birds, frogs and insects. It’s a very beautiful and peaceful place. I really recommend it if you visit Cairns.

今回のテーマはIntonationとWord Stressです！

“Steve is my cousin”
という見ただけでは何の変哲もない文章を使って、
イントネーションとアクセントで意味がどのように変化するのか、
皆さまと見ていきたいと思います👍

解説してくれたのは、英語講師のStuartです😄

“Steve is my cousin”

This sentence has one simple meaning, the literal one,
but if we stress each word it changes the meaning.

① “STEVE is my cousin”
→ this could mean that Steve, not Robert is my cousin.
(「僕のいとこはロバートじゃなくてスティーブだよ！」といったニュアンスで
相手に伝えることができます)

② “Steve IS my cousin”
→ this is confirming that Steve really is my cousin.
(「スティーブは本当に僕のいとこだよ！」と断定の
意味を含んだ言い方になります)

③ “Steve is MY cousin”
→ this corrects that Steve is my cousin, not Robert’s cousin.
(「スティーブは僕のいとこだよ！」
”誰の”なのかを主張したい場合に使えます)

④ “Steve is my COUSIN“
→ this claims that Steve is nothing but a cousin.
(「スティーブは弟ではなくて僕のいとこなんだよ！」と、
何なのか・どんな存在なのかを明らかにするときに
使えるｲﾝﾄﾈｰｼｮﾝです)

文章を見ただけでは文字通りの意味しか持たないとしても、
話し方や強弱の付け方ひとつで意味が変わるのは英語も日本語も
同じですね👏

英語を勉強しよう、もしくはすでに勉強されている方は「イディオム」について聞いたことがあったり学んだことがあるかもしれません。

本日はイディオムについて、イギリス出身の講師Stuartに聞いてみました(^^♪

Idioms-What are they?

How is it that “wind up” and “wind down” can be opposites but also mean the same thing?

“The project is winding up soon,” it’s stopping soon.

“Let’s wind things down in here,” let’s stop.

Why? Because English is a crazy language! (Then again, all languages are).

Idioms are combinations of words whose meaning is more figurative than literal and can sometimes change with popular culture.

I think they’re useful as they offer color to language, they show emotional intelligence, the difference between a sketch and a painting , black and white and color.

But be careful, overusing idioms can make you look foolish and people might “give you the cold shoulder”.（冷たい態度をとる、よそよそしくする）

いよいよ近づいてきましたね！💕🍫
わたしは、自分用に少し高級なチョコレートを
買おうかなとワクワクしています( *´艸｀)

さて、今回は英語講師のHirokiに
Australia🐨でのバレンタインについて質問してみました🎤

Love is in the air!
Or at least the smell of chocolate is in the air!
Valentines Day is approaching and did you know that
Valentines Day in Japan is celebrated quite differently to
how it is celebrated in most other countries around the world?

Here in Japan, it is the women who gives chocolate to the men.
However, in Australia for example, it is stereo-typically
the man who buys a gift🎁 or a rose🌹 for their loved ones.
Nowadays both parties of the couple often buys
each other gifts🎁 and maybe go out for
a nice dinner🍽 at a restaurant.
But restaurants for February 14th prepare a special
Valentines Day course which is usually quite expensive!
Hence, the idea of White Day doesn’t exist overseas.

So, Valentines Day in most countries around the world,
is just a day to celebrate love with our special ones💕.
To all the men with partners, how about surprising your
partner with flowers / roses this year?

日本におけるバレンタインは、愛を伝え合う日というよりも
チョコを贈らなくてはならないという「義務感」の強い
独特なイベントになっていますね💭

Hirokiのいうように、また他の国と同じように、
日本でのバレンタインが純粋に「愛」をお互いに
伝え合うイベントになるといいですね!(^^)!
