旅行に行ったり、夏祭りに行ったり、ゆっくりお家で過ごしたり……それぞれの夏休みを楽しまれたのではないでしょうか？

今回は、Ai先生が「お金をかけずに東京を楽しむ」をテーマに、英語でブログを書いてくれました！ 🗼✨

旅行費や物価が上がっている今だからこそ、遠くへ旅行に行かなくても、東京にはまだまだ楽しめる場所がたくさんあります。

無料の展示を見に行ったり、普段行かない街を歩いてみたり、公園でのんびりしたり、夜の東京を散歩したり……🌃

Ai先生は、そんな「お金をあまりかけずに楽しめる東京」の魅力を紹介してくれています！

Obon is fast approaching and yet my schedule is surprisingly empty. I had hoped to travel somewhere but with the rising costs in travel, I decided to spend my break in Tokyo. The theme I’ve given myself for my summer break is: ”Enjoying Tokyo without breaking the bank”. There is so much to see and do in the city but they often come at a cost. So my mission this year is to find activities to do that require minimal spending. This includes visiting either free or cheap exhibitions, going to summer festivals, exploring new neighbouhoods, doing late night walks, and thrifting at one of the many vintage stores or flea markets you can find in Tokyo

With over 400 museums scattered across Tokyo, you could visit a new gallery every day for a year and barely scratch the surface. While special exhibitions can get a bit pricey, finding free or ultra-cheap artsy spots is surprisingly easy if you know where to look.I’ve already loved exploring places like the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Pola Museum Annex (a hidden gem in Ginza that hosts completely free exhibitions year-round). Up next on my wishlist? Diving into watchmaking history at the Seiko Museum Ginza, catching vintage cinema history at the National Film Archive (where gallery tickets are just ¥250), and touring the Ichigaya Letterpress Factory—a restored 1920s printing plant where you can see classic typography in action.

After soaking in an exhibition, there’s no better low-cost activity than simply getting lost in a new neighborhood. Everyone knows about Shibuya or Ikebukuro, but Tokyo is really a collection of mini-cities, each with its own distinct personality. Stepping off the beaten path is how you find the quiet cafes, vintage alleyways, and potentially your new favourite hangout spot. My most recent “discovery” is Koto-Ward, specifically Kiyosumi-Shirokawa. It’s a neighborhood where old-school Tokyo charm meets a bustling third-wave coffee scene. You can easily spend an entire day here without spending much at all:

Free Rides & Park Strolls:Head over to Yokojukken-gawa Shinsui Park, a lovely waterfront par where you can actually take a ride on a traditional wooden rowing boat (wasen) for free. You can also wander through the Kiyosumi Gardens or relax at Kiba Park.
Museums on a Dime:Check out the Fukagawa Edo Museum (just ¥400 entry), which features a full-scale replica of an 1800s Edo neighborhood complete with changing day-to-night lighting effects
Culture & Shrines:Walk a bit further down to visit Tomioka Hachimangu, the largest Hachiman shrine in Tokyo, known for its historic summer water-splashing festival (Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri). It’s also famous as the birthplace of Edo professional sumo (holding Japan’s first official tournaments in the 1600s) and regularly hosts antique fares and flea markets.

Tokyo summer nights are the perfect time to take night walks. I particularly enjoy walking around Toyosu and seeing the beautifully lit tall buildings and bridges such as Rainbrow Bridge and Tokyo Gate Bridge (also known as the “Dinosaur Bride”) To top off a quiet late-night stroll, nothing beats grabbing a pack of handheld sparklers from a nearby convenience store and lighting them down by Toyosu Park.

At the end of the day, a fantastic summer break in Tokyo is less about how much you spend and more about who you spend it with and where you choose to wander. From quiet museum galleries to late-night waterfront strolls, the city is packed with so many things to do that won’t cost an arm and a leg. I hope this inspires you to go out and explore the wonderful city that is Tokyo

お盆が間近に迫っているのに、私のスケジュールは意外にも空いています。どこかへ旅行に行きたいと思っていたのですが、旅行費の高騰もあり、休暇は東京で過ごすことにしました。今年の夏休みで自分に課したテーマは、「お金をかけずに東京を楽しむ」です。この街には見どころや楽しみがたくさんありますが、その多くは費用がかかります。そこで今年の私のミッションは、出費を最小限に抑えられるアクティビティを見つけることです。これには、無料または格安の展覧会への訪問、夏祭りの参加、新しい街の探索、深夜の散歩、そして東京の至る所にあるヴィンテージショップやフリーマーケットでの掘り出し物探しなどが含まれます。

東京には400以上の美術館や博物館が点在しており、1年間毎日新しいギャラリーを訪れたとしても、そのほんの一部しか回れないほどです。特別展は少々高額になることもありますが、どこを探せばよいかさえ分かっていれば、無料や超格安の芸術スポットを見つけるのは意外と簡単です。私はすでに、東京都現代美術館やポーラ美術館アネックス（銀座にある隠れた名所で、年間を通じて完全に無料の展覧会を開催しています）などを探索して楽しんでいます。次に訪れたい場所は？ セイコーミュージアム銀座で時計製造の歴史に浸ったり、国立映画アーカイブ（入場料はたったの250円）でヴィンテージ映画の歴史に触れたり、1920年代の印刷工場を復元した「市ヶ谷活版工場」を見学して、伝統的な活版印刷の現場を間近で見学したりすることです。
