For golden week this year I had the opportunity to travel to Okinawa for the first time. I’d been putting off visiting Okinawa because I had this image that it was like a resort destination and that wasn’t really my scene. But I am glad I went and was proven wrong. During our time in Okinawa we visited Chatan, Naha, and Zamami.

Chatan has an interesting blend of American and Japanese culture. With numerous eateries, stunning ocean views, and an energy that feels unlike anywhere else in Japan, it’s a place that’s hard not to fall for. I was particularly drawn to American Village, with its brightly coloured buildings, and vintage American-style signs. As for the dining aspect, I really enjoyed Okinawa Soba from Hamaya, Thai Mango Sticky Rice from Pasathai Okinawa, and the food from Franky Tavern

Naha is the capital city and the biggest city in Okinawa. It has a different atmosphere to Chatan. Where Chatan is relaxed and laid-back, Naha is bustling. I enjoyed exploring the shopping streets close to Kokusai-dori. They felt like an endless maze and you could go on exploring them forever.

Zamami island is one of the four inhabited islands of the Keramas. Along with the uninhabited islands they make up Keramashoto National Park. We were on Zamami for about three days- three days of running, swimming, barbequing, eating, and catspotting. Words cannot describe the beauty that was Zamami. Despite it being mostly rainly while we were there, we enjoyed the beach and the views from all the observatories. Oh and I had some of the best tacos I’ve ever had: GYPSY COURT ZAMAMI. If you’re ever in the area, do not skip it

Overall, Okinawa completely won me over and is now my favourite place in Japan. The food, the people, the local culture, and the cats were what made the trip so memorable. I hope to return to explore even more of Okinawa.
