I’ve been very busy and am now writing about what I did during Golden Week.

In March, I used my airline miles to book two round-trip tickets to Hawaii. Since Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines merged and became one company, my points with both also combined so I had enough for the tickets.

We went to the rainy side of the big island and stayed in a small cottage overlooking the sea about one kilometer away.

We visited some of our favorite restaurants and went back to some places we’d visited before plus some new places. I went out in the ocean where there are many sea turtles and brightly colored fish. The sand on the beach is black with many yellowish green crystals of olivine. Another beach we visited is near where the lava flowed to the ocean in 2017. That beach is now all black stones, some are quite large and when the waves roll in it there is a deep, low rumble sound as the stones crash into each other.

There are many interesting animals in Hawaii, some are farm animals that escaped long ago. We saw wild pigs, chickens, goats and weasels.

We kept checking the webcams near the Kilauea volcano because an eruption was predicted. On the morning of May 5th, the webcams showed there were fountains of lava coming from the volcano. We drove to Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park and walked to the edge of the crater to get some pictures. You could hear the roar of the lava fountains and when we got as close as we were allowed, we could faintly feel the heat. There were thin strands of glass like rock that was falling from the sky. The Hawaiian people call the Pele’s hair, named after the volcano deity, Pele. When we returned to our car there was a lot of it on the car. We came back after dark but the eruption had stopped but I took some pictures of the still hot lava glowing in the volcanic crater.

It rained much of the time we were there but we were very lucky that it would only rain a short time and then stop for a while.
