Autumn time in the San Francisco Bay Area is when it starts to get colder than it already is.
Since we are a city that’s right on the ocean and surrounded by other areas that have a lot of hills, we constantly have either a ocean breeze or hillside winds coming into the city making it a fairly cold place where we always wear jeans and a hooded sweater, light jacket, or long sleeve.
The two holidays that happen during Autumn time in America is Halloween and Thanksgiving day. One, as young adults we know is a time to go to Haunted Houses that pop up around the Bay Area, and also Halloween themed parties where everyone dresses up. The second is Thanksgiving. A holidays based on giving thanks for what we have, where our families get together to have a big dinner with TONS of food.
Since I first moved to Japan, I would always go back home to visit a few times a year and one of them would always be in November since my grandmothers birthday is 2 days before Thanksgiving and I can knock out two special events in one trip. Usually when it comes to the major American holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas are the two where you always end up seeing and meeting with most of your family on all sides (mothers and fathers), so it was a very productive time for me to go back home to visit since I don’t have to spend too much of my vacation time running around all over trying to visit different family members and friends.
Visiting around this time is also good for me since I get to eat a LOT of my families home cooking which I tend to miss here in Japan. I do cook some of what would be my families style of comfort foods, but, nothing beats grandmas cooking! And I think that is pretty universal across the world!
The past few years during this pandemic I haven’t been able to go back home since travel in Japan was very strict, even for those holding Resident Visas, but I am hoping that I will go back soon to visit my friends and family during this time to give them a lot of hugs and to enjoy some great times and food!
