今週の英語ブログは「日本の文化!漫画やアニメについて」です☺
So, you have probably asked many of your teachers why they decided to live in Japan. Some common answers among teachers seem to be: “I studied Japanese in school.” or, “I`m interested in Japanese history.” or even simply even, “I love Japanese food.” One answer that seems surprisingly popular is that people were inspired to come because of their love for Japanese cartoons, commonly referred to as simply “anime”.
Manga and anime are everywhere in Japan, and it is no secret that it`s a common interest among children and adults alike. What you might not know however, is just how incredibly popular it is amongst younger generations in western countries. In the 1990s and early 2000s, popular anime began to be broadcasted on cartoon networks all across North America. Probably the most common were Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon. In Canada for instance, every Saturday between 7pm and 11pm, popular anime would be played on one of Canada`s most popular kids` networks, called “YTV“. Some shows like Dragon Ball Z would be played even more regularly, sometimes 5 times a week!
Since many young children were captivated by the Japanese art style at a young age for the past 20 or 30 years, it has become more mainstream as young athletes and celebrities voice their support. While for a longtime anime was thought to be for “geeks” or “nerds” (“otaku” in Japanese), we have seen the stereotype shift in recent years. Popular NBA basketball players like Joel Embiid and Luka Dončić have even worn anime themed shoes while playing. So, if you’re ever wondering why so many teachers may be interested, just know that Japanese anime has become more commonplace in western societies.
