Hello! My name is David.
I’m from the UK, but I live and work as an English Instructor at NOVA in Shizuoka prefecture.🗻
This is my second time living and working in Japan; seven years ago, I lived in Akita prefecture.👹
I noticed some differences between the UK and Japan when I first came to Japan seven years ago,and I’ve noticed these again after coming to Shizuoka.

🗾Here are three of the differences that I’ve noticed.

①When shopping in Japan, if you say that you don’t need a receipt,the shop staff will often put a small sticker (with the name of the shop or department store)on the products that you’ve bought.🛍
My Japanese friends have told me that this is so that you can prove that you did indeed buy the products.
In the UK, if you say that you don’t need a receipt,shop staff don’t put any stickers on the products that you’ve bought.

②When entering many buildings on rainy days (especially places like department stores)there is something at the entrance in which people can put their wet umbrellas;when they then take out their umbrellas again, the umbrellas are wrapped in plastic.🌂
My Japanese friends have told me that people do this in order to prevent their umbrellas dripping water on the floors of places like department stores.
As far as I’m aware, we don’t have anything like this in the UK,so water just drips from people’s umbrellas, leading to wet floors!

③In places like supermarkets, as well as on trains,staff bow to customers and passengers when entering and leaving the shop floor or train carriage;
I remember seeing this on the Shinkansen for the first time.🚅
In the UK, supermarket and train staff don’t bow when entering and leaving the shop floor or train carriage.
Also, when I watched a soccer game in Akita,I was surprised to see the players and match officials bow to the spectators in the stands; this doesn’t happen in the UK.⚽

If you’ve travelled and/or lived abroad,what differences have you noticed between Japan and the countries you’ve visited and/or lived in?

Thank you for reading!🌼
