Maybe you have heard of the 4th of July? That is the birthday of the United States in 1776, but do you know what is on the 26th of January? It is 🐨Australia Day🐨, the official national day of Australia！
January 26 marks the anniversary of the arrival in 1788 of the first British ships in Australia, and the raising of the British flag.
It is a public holiday, and similar to the 4th of July in America, many families get together and have picnics, barbecues🍖 and watch fireworks🎆. The government also gives special awards to important Australians.
Recently however, it has also become a controversial day. Some indigenous Australians (Aborigines) see Australia Day as a celebration of the invasion of their land by Europeans, and use the name Invasion Day as a protest.
