Why English matters for Japanese Learners
“Do I really need English?” is a common and fair question to ask in Japan. You can live a full life here in Japan using your native language, without ever having the need for recourse to English. Translation apps are getting better, and in the near future, they will offer live translation while you talk. So, do you really need to study English?
The honest answer is still emphatically “yes.” Not because English makes you a better person or more capable than your peers, but because it quietly opens doors that would otherwise stay shut. The key is to understand that 1.5 billion people now speak English around the world. English is the go-to language for all forms of business, and many Japanese companies require the use of English across their business platforms.
What is the true scale of it in global business?
Roughly 52% of multinational companies have adopted a language other than their native tongue to support global expansion. What language is that? In practice, it is almost always English!
Access to the Wider World
We need it, right? We travel, we move around the globe, and we use the internet. In fact, do you realize that most of the internet, most research, and most of the world’s news is published in English first, and much of it is never translated? Being able to read it yourself and communicate about it means you can demonstrate your standing in the global community.
Travel changes, too. With English, you can ask questions, read the signs, and talk to the person next to you, almost anywhere. Without it, you are a spectator on your own trip, isolated, and lacking the ability to truly mingle and appreciate the depth of what is around you.
Do You Need to Be Fluent?
No, absolutely not! You do not need to be a fluent English speaker, nor does your English need to be perfect for any of this to pay off, bravery goes a long way! Surprisingly, enough English to hold a simple conversation already puts you ahead of most of the people around you.
Well, it really isn’t so difficult; the difficulty comes from the obstacles you place in your way. “Ah, sorry, no speak English,” “English is too difficult,” “I don’t like English,” “I never travel abroad,” “They speak too fast”—the list of excuses is endless. And yet, 1.5 billion people speak English, and Japan still ranks low in English proficiency.
I don’t want to believe that, because after 12 years of living here teaching English, I know you can do better. I’ve seen you do better. So come on, people, show the world what you are made of! Show the world that you can be number one, take English by the horns, and make it your language, too! Why? Because English matters more than you realise!
With all my everlasting support,
Aragorn
