Nature Walks 
I love walking around in natural areas like woods, fields, or places with little to no population. Being able to see and spend time in these natural spaces is very relaxing for me. In Georgia, there are many hiking trails and beautiful spots to explore and enjoy. When I came to Japan, I immediately started walking around, looking for natural spots and secluded areas. I’ve been able to fully enjoy the stunning scenery and have taken many beautiful and memorable photos. I can’t wait to discover even more of Japan’s hiking areas.

青森の短い夏がそろそろ終わりを迎えますね🌻
Germaine先生に夏休みの思い出を聞いてみました✋

During my summer break, I went and had a fun time at Nebuta with Brenden. We enjoyed the floats that were on display and even tried some of the food and drinks there. One thing we did was visit a shrine in the area, it was really beautiful, I loved the green hue that the area gave. I also mistakenly walked to Tsukimino Cemetery (月見野墓園), thinking it was a park. I looked it up online but didn’t know the kanji for “cemetery,” and ended up taking a two-hour walk there. I was embarrassed but hey, I got some good exercise and pictures out of it!

My Illustrated Guide to Enjoying Japanese Summer 

This is my fourth summer living in Japan. Each year, I learn more about how to enjoy and stay safe in the hot and humid weather. Summer in Japan is very different from where I’m from. It’s hotter and much more humid. My favorite part of Japanese summer is hearing the semi (cicadas) sing, the exciting energy of festivals, and the long days and late sunsets.

To help you get the most out of these last (and hottest) days of summer, I made this easy illustrated guide featuring a white otter named Creature. I share my favorite tips to stay cool and healthy during Japanese summer, no matter where in Japan you are.

Let’s learn together how to beat the heat and enjoy the last of summer!

1. Stay Hydrated
Summer in Japan is very humid, even up north here in Aomori. When we sweat we lose water and minerals, so it’s important to drink often and not just when you feel thirsty!

The good news is that there are vending machines and konbinis everywhere, even in small towns and train stations. You can always find a cooling drink like water, tea, or a sports drinks. I personally like mugi-cha (barley tea) because it has no caffeine and tastes refreshing! 

2. Eat for Energy
In summer, you might feel too hot to eat. But your body needs good food to stay healthy and energized! Here are some of my favorite Japanese foods that are easy to eat in summer:

• Unagi (grilled eel): It’s full of vitamin B1 and helps fight fatigue.
• Pork dishes: Also high in vitamin B1—try it with salad or vegetables!
• Umeboshi (pickled plums): the sourness is great for your appetite and digestion.
• Fruits and veggies: water rich fruits and veggies like watermelon, tomatoes, cucumbers, and celery help keep you hydrated.
• Zaru udon or soba (cold noodles): Light, cooling, and easy to eat so these are perfect for hot days!

3. Protect Your Skin
Even in Aomori, the sun is strong in summer and there is little shade. I always wear sunscreen when I go outside, even on cloudy days. Japanese sunscreen is very light and smooth so it’s easy to reapply during the day! In addition to sunscreen, I recommend using a sun umbrella, portable fan, sunglasses, hats, and UV cut clothing for an extra layer of protection.

4. Explore 
Sometimes, the best way to beat the heat is to leave the city and take a short trip into nature. In Aomori, we’re lucky to have mountains, lakes, and the sea nearby. I enjoy visiting places up north a bit that aren’t as hot, like the Shimokita Peninsula, or taking evening walks when it’s cooler and hearing the cicadas sing. 

5. Enjoy the Season
Summer in Japan is full of special traditions. I recommend going to summer festivals, wearing a light yukata, eating kakigōri (shaved ice), and enjoying fireworks. Even though the days are hot, nights can bring some relief and a great time to be outside. 

Now that you know some of my tips, I hope you can enjoy Japanese summer too! Stay cool, drink a lot, eat well, and try something new. Let’s enjoy the last days of summer together!

今回のブログでは初めて青森で夏を過ごす
Sophia先生に今年の夏のプランを聞いてみました🎵

I love summer! It’s my favorite season. I look forward to it every year. Even though it’s very humid in Japan, the sun gives me energy and makes me happy.

In July, I will go to Hakodate to celebrate my birthday. It will be my first time in Hokkaido, so I’m very excited. I want to try the local food and sightsee. I am most looking forward to see the night view from Mt. Hakodate and eat at Lucky Pierrot.

In August. I will go to my first Nebuta Festival in Aomori City. I’ve heard it’s a very fun and exciting event. During Obon, I will relax a lot and visit Mutsu.

Even though I love summer, the weather can be very hot, so it’s important to take care of your body. To stay cool, I drink a lot of barley tea. I also recommend foods like unagi, soba, umeboshi, and fruits like watermelon. These foods help give us energy and keep us cool.

『青森の夏』を感じられますね✨

遠く離れたアイルランドから日本に来たBrendan先生に
故郷の夏について教えてもらいました👂

Summer in Donegal, Ireland.

Donegal, or “Dun na ngall” (Fort of the Foreigner in Gaelic), is Ireland’s northernmost county/prefecture. It is known for its picturesque nature. sporting mountains rivers lakes beaches and forests. And for its remoteness.
The average temperature in summer is an average of 16 degrees, but recently it has been getting the odd mid-20s with global warming. So it is ideal for outdoor activities such as surfing, hiking, and camping.
Donegal is a really agricultural area, so there is a lot of harvesting of hay and vegetables during the summer. One unique activity that is done is “Turf cutting”.
Turf is the local name for peat. The peat is cut from bogs, dried and used in the fire during winter months.
My home village of Clonmany, or “Cluain Maine” (Monk’s Meadow in Gaelic), plays host to Ireland’s largest country and western music festival. It attracts 15000 to 20000 visitors every year and lasts for one week.

7月といえばアメリカにとって大事な日があります🌟
7月4日の【独立記念日】です。
Germaine先生に独立記念日について聞いてみました👂

4th of July

In America, we have an Independence Day holiday every 4th of July. This became the holiday that marks when America became a separate country, free from British control. Even though we didn’t officially gain our independence until August 2nd, the date written on the Declaration of Independence is July 4th, so that’s the day we celebrate.
One of the main traditions on this holiday is fireworks. People gather a bunch of them and shoot them off into the sky. Now, picture the entire country doing this — it can get a bit chaotic, and it often does. Every night around the 4th, you can hear fireworks going off and see them being shot into the air across neighborhoods.
This can sometimes scare animals, so people often set up quiet areas where their pets can hide from the noise. But since people are allowed to buy large, powerful fireworks, things can get out of hand. People have been hurt, and fires have started because kids mishandle fireworks or accidentally set them off in their hands.
I love the 4th of July because it’s fun and a great time to spend with family and friends, but I also think the amount and power of the fireworks that are available can be a bit dangerous for everyday people. I recommend seeing the celebration if you’re able — it can be an amazing, yet overwhelming experience, especially if it’s your first time.

この一年で感じたことを聞いてみました👂

1 Year In

After one year of living in Japan, how do I feel? Well, I’d say it’s been full of ups and downs. Compared to America, a lot of my stress has decreased, but I still worry about my family. I’ve gotten better at Japanese, I’m able to understand and say more than I ever could back in America, and my confidence has increased a little, too.
I do miss my family and friends, so I feel lonely at times. But I’ve also enjoyed going out to new places, trying new things, and seeing more of the country. Even though I go out more often than I did in America, I’m more nervous about talking to people and going to new places. This is mainly because a lot of places here in Japan are small, and I get nervous about accidentally knocking things over when I walk in.
I’ve also become a bit shy when speaking Japanese sometimes because I tend to forget words and grammar structures I should know. Speaking can be difficult. Still, I try, and I’ve met some interesting people. Usually, it’s elderly people, teenagers, or kids who have the confidence to talk to me, Its rarely people around my own age.
The food here has been amazing, and I love trying new things. But I do miss most of the food from back home. I crave chipotle burritos, or mexican tacos and nachos. I try to make it myself when I can, but it’s never quite the same. I’m sure that once I’ve been here longer, I’ll get more craves for Japanese food, right now tonkatsudon and curry are becoming my favorites. Still, it’s harder to eat when japanese dishes are saltier than some of american dishes.
Japan has been an interesting and fun place to live, and I’d really like to see more of it. Once I feel more settled and comfortable, I’ll be able to decide whether I want to stay permanently or just temporarily. I know I can always go back and visit home, but money has been tight lately. For now, I do want to continue to stay in Japan for as long as i can and keep exploring more of the country and meeting new people.
