Greetings from Nikayla!

Many overseas people are coming to Japan recently, have you ever wanted to try and speak to them in English?
It can be a bit challenging speaking to strangers, in Japan, we usually keep to ourselves but if we see someone we want to talk to, we should try making conversation.

Some common questions to ask include “Where are you from?”, “What brought you to Japan?” and “What Japanese food do you like?” These questions are simple and easy to remember.

Have you ever visited another country? Were you able to speak in English?

It’s always a good idea to step out of our comfort zone (so that we can grow).
I’ve been studying Japanese for about two years now, but I always get nervous when I have to speak in Japanese. Does this happen to you too?

What advice would you give someone who is trying to learn your language?

I think confidence comes from knowledge, so if I can learn more on sentence structure then it would be easier for me to communicate.

Let’s share our experiences in class next time!

Animal Kingdom Event Lesson

On January 24^th there was a special event kids’ lesson at the Ritto school. In the lesson we practiced “What’s your favorite animal?” and we talked about elephants, pandas, monkeys, giraffes, and lions.  It was a lot of fun!

“What’s your favorite animal?” is actually a really difficult question to answer.  Can you guess mine?

I grew up in the countryside and my family had horses, sheep, chickens, dogs, cats, and even a goat. I also enjoyed catching wild snakes and lizards and had pet hamsters and fish in my room!

Sometimes I could see wild animals around my house like deer, moose, bald eagles, rattle snakes, coyotes, and racoons.  These are all pretty normal where I come from.

When visiting the zoo, I remember being so fascinated with the monkeys, gorillas, lions, elephants and other exotic animals because they were so different from our local animals.

Did you know that there are no wild monkeys in North America?  So for Americans, monkeys are considered an exotic animal.  “Exotic” often refers to things like food, plants or animals that are unusual and very fascinating because they come from a faraway foreign land.

The Kyoto Zoo, Adventure World and Kobe Animal Kingdom are a few great places to see exotic animals in Kansai.

Happy New Year!

 

All of us at NOVA hope 2026 is off to a good start for our students and look forward to welcoming everyone back after the holidays.  Did you have a good New Year’s holiday?  Some of us traveled.  Some of us stayed home to relax. I ate a lot of food and am now focusing on losing weight!

My  New Year resolution is to improve my health!

In lessons this week, one common topic has been New Year resolutions.  A resolution is a strong or official decision to do something.  A New Year resolution is a goal or target for the year ahead.   Do you make New Year resolutions? What’s your goal for 2026? Common New Year resolutions include improving health, improving a skill or learning something new.

Another topic that has come up in lessons this week is the word “challenge.”  The word is commonly misused by English learners.  For example, “I want to challenge climbing Mount Fuji.” It’s better to use the word “try” as in “I want to try climbing Mount Fuji.”

As a verb, challenge means to encourage or push someone to do something. For example, “My brother challenged me to climb Mount Fuji.”

As a noun, a challenge means a difficult task.  For example, “Learning a new language is a challenge.”  We can also use it as an adjective: “Learning a new language is challenging.”

For this month, I would like to challenge you to make a New Year resolution.  If your resolution is to improve your English, let’s start by using the word “challenge” correctly!
