4月から高松の生活でだいぶ慣れてきたようで、自転車を買っていろんなところに行っているみたいです⛩

Hello, my name is Ayrton.
I’m from the UK. I’ve always wanted to come to Japan so I can learn about the history, culture and try to learn the language. I’m enjoying living and working in Kagawa and have been living here since April 2022, after waiting for 2 years thanks to Covid!

I enjoy playing video games on my computer and Nintendo switch. The thing I like most about Japan so far, is the amount of nature parks there are.I like cycling to them and looking around, at the moment my favorite one is Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu, it is beautiful! I want to see lots of shrines and temples as I travel around the country, so plan to visit places like Kyoto, Nara and Mie. If you have any recommendations for other places I should visit, then please let me know in our lessons together.

I’m excited to explore more of the country and make lots of new friends. I look forward to meeting you soon!

今日のイディオムは、”the whole nine yards”。

the whole nine yards – (ex: He made dinner and the whole nine yards.) – meaning – everything/to do all that was needed to be done
「すべて」「一切合切」「完璧」といった意味で使われます。
アメリカのスラングなのかイギリスの講師に言うとどういう意味って言われました🤣🤣🤣

A:  How was your trip to Las Vegas?

B:  Oh, it was great!  We stayed at Caesar’s Palace Hotel, we went to several shows, we played many different casino games, we relaxed by the pool.  We really went the whole nine yards.

日本でもことわざがあります！では、問題です！
“practice makes perfect“を日本のことわざで表すと何でしょう？！

practice makes perfect
– (used as a set phrase) means that if you practice you will not make mistakes when it really matters.

A: Why is the guitar so difficult?  I bought it last week and I can’t even play a single song yet!

B:  Be patient, practice makes perfect.  Try practicing for an hour every day and in a month, you’ll definitely see some improvement.

さて、本日はIdiomをご紹介します！
今日のイディオムは、”to be/put yourself in someone’s shoes”。

to be/put yourself in someone’s shoes
– (ex: I would hate to be in his shoes.)
means to put yourself in someone’s position or situation.

A: I’m so mad at Bob, today was the 2nd time this month that he was late for work.

B:  You shouldn’t be so angry with him.  Put yourself in his shoes, his wife just had twins last month and his car broke down so he’s been taking the bus.  Plus, he was only 5 minutes late and apologized as soon as he got in.  He said his bus was late again.

A:  Yeah, I guess you’re right, he must be stressed out and exhausted.  I shouldn’t be so hard on him.

カルチャーショック第2弾！
Chrisが日本に来てから衝撃を受けたことを話してくれました😄
首都圏でも田舎でも子供たちが子供たちだけで通学している姿を日本ではよく見かけますよね。
でも、海外から来た講師達には不思議な光景なんだそうです。
6歳くらいの子が一人で電車に乗って通学してるのを見て、あまりにビックリして周りを見渡して親御様の姿を探した！そうです😆
Chrisの話を読んでいきましょう。

One of the things that really surprised me when I moved to Japan was how often I see unsupervised children.  I moved from Los Angeles to Osaka in 2017.  Both are large cities with millions of people but the way that children traverse these two cities couldn’t be any more different.
（子供たちが一人で行動してるのを見て驚いたみたいです。L.A.と大阪では子供たちの通学が全然違うようですね。）

I was so shocked to see school children, who appeared to be 6 or 7 years old, quite confidently maneuver their way through Osaka Station, tap their ICOCA cards and board trains, all without any adult supervision.  Just out there commuting to and from school like salarymen going to work.  The first few times I witnessed this I wondered to myself where their parents were and why could they possibly be out in the world by themselves like this.
（大人が通勤するように通学する6歳か7歳の子を初めて目にしたんでしょうね。親御様がどこにいるのか周りを探したみたいです。日本では、目にする光景ですよね。）

In Los Angeles, if I saw a 13 or 14 year old kid by themselves I would wonder where their parents were.  If I saw a 6 year old by themselves, I might look around for a police officer and ask them to help the kid find his or her way.  I have two nieces that are 11 and 14 years old and my brother or my sister-in-law still pick them up from school everyday.  When I was young, I lived in the countryside, far away from the big city, but still, I took the school bus to and from school everyday.  It picked me up directly in front of my house and dropped me off at the school.
（L.A.では、13歳や14歳の子が一人でいると親御様を探すんですね。州によっては、一人で留守番できる年齢が法律で決まっているようです。外出も州によって法律があるみたいです。16歳や17歳でも大人の監視なしで、場合によって最大2日までだそうです。Chrisの姪っ子や甥っ子は、親御様が学校に迎えに行っているみたいですね。共働きの家庭は大変ですね。バスが家の前まで来てくれるはいいですね。）

I think the difference between the two situations, Japan and the US, comes down to the safety of the countries.  As I’ve come to learn, Japan is one of the safest nations on the planet, safe enough for small children to travel through the city without fear.  Whereas, in the US there is more crime.  The possibility of something happening to an unsupervised child in the US is greater than it is in Japan.  Having grown up there, I don’t really consider the US to be an inherently dangerous place, but I do consider Japan to be an unusually safe place in comparison with the rest of the world.  And this amazing level of safety that I find unusual has led to, what seems to me to be, an unusual level of freedom for the children of Japan.
（Chrisが子供のころアメリカで生活をして治安が悪いと危険を感じたことがないようですが、それ以上に日本は平和な国なんだとこの光景を見て感じたようです。）

外国に行った時や外国人と接して文化の違いで驚くことがあると思います。
外国人も同じで日本に来て日本で住んでみて驚くことがたくさん( ﾟДﾟ)
今日は、Chrisが日本に来て驚いたことを聞いてみました😄
どんなことに驚いたか聞いてみましょう。

One of the first things in Japan that I noticed was different from where I come from is the price of fruit.  I was very shocked when I first came to Japan to see a melon for sale in a grocery store in Kobe for nearly ¥3000!  I was so surprised that I took a photo of it to send to my friends in the US.  I’m from Los Angeles and the average price of a melon is about $2.75 (about ¥316).  And it’s not just melons, all fruit and vegetables seem to be more expensive here in Japan.  I regularly pay about ¥600 for a bag of 6 or 7 oranges at the grocery store here in Takamatsu and in Los Angeles, I would get a bag of 10 or 12 oranges for about $3.00 (¥345).  Tomatoes here are usually about ¥100 each, in LA you can get a package of 6 for about $2.00 (¥230).
（日本に来て最初に驚いたのはフルーツの価格の違いだったみたいですね。それにしても安くて羨ましい😫）

I think there are many reasons for this.  One is that a large amount of the fruit in the United States is grown in California.  Because of this, the trip from the farm to the grocery store produce section is a short one so the cost of transportation is not a significant part of the price of the fruit.  Another reason I think the price of fruit is higher in Japan is simply the quality of it.  I’m not saying the quality of the fruit in Los Angeles is bad, but the Japanese fruit is definitely higher quality.  When I describe Japanese fruit to my friends in the states, I use two words; “expensive” and “beautiful”.  The fruit here is definitely some of the best looking fruit I have ever seen, I saw some ¥3000 grapes in the YouMe Town grocery store that were so beautiful, they didn’t even look real!

So yes, the fruit in Japan is much more expensive than I am used to seeing, but the quality is also a lot higher than I am used to so I guess it all balances out.
（輸送費も価格の違いに関係すると思いますが、Chrisの言うように品質もその一つですね。日本のフルーツは、いろいろと品種改良されジューシーで美味しいですよね。）

もう一つ教えてくれたのが、日本ではスーパーに見た目のいいくだものや野菜が並んでいて、農家直営や道の駅などで売られているのが傷ありだったりすることが多いと思うのですが、アメリカでは逆なことが多いらしいです😲
場所にもよるようですが🙄
