I think the difference between the two situations, Japan and the US, comes down to the safety of the countries. As I’ve come to learn, Japan is one of the safest nations on the planet, safe enough for small children to travel through the city without fear. Whereas, in the US there is more crime. The possibility of something happening to an unsupervised child in the US is greater than it is in Japan. Having grown up there, I don’t really consider the US to be an inherently dangerous place, but I do consider Japan to be an unusually safe place in comparison with the rest of the world. And this amazing level of safety that I find unusual has led to, what seems to me to be, an unusual level of freedom for the children of Japan.
One of the first things in Japan that I noticed was different from where I come from is the price of fruit. I was very shocked when I first came to Japan to see a melon for sale in a grocery store in Kobe for nearly ¥3000! I was so surprised that I took a photo of it to send to my friends in the US. I’m from Los Angeles and the average price of a melon is about $2.75 (about ¥316). And it’s not just melons, all fruit and vegetables seem to be more expensive here in Japan. I regularly pay about ¥600 for a bag of 6 or 7 oranges at the grocery store here in Takamatsu and in Los Angeles, I would get a bag of 10 or 12 oranges for about $3.00 (¥345). Tomatoes here are usually about ¥100 each, in LA you can get a package of 6 for about $2.00 (¥230).
I lived in an area that typically got a lot of snow every winter. January and February temperatures often went down to -20C or even -30C. And my hometown was located just south of Ontario Lake, one of the 5 Great Lakes. Cold wind would blow south from Canada, pick up moisture over Ontario Lake and then drop A LOT of snow in my area. 30cm on the ground throughout January and February was not uncommon and at times it could be up to a meter deep!
I remember very clearly waking up on snowy mornings and being so excited by the possibility of a day off school. I grew up before the internet was around so school closings were announced on the local radio stations. My brother and I would get ready for school as normal, just in case it wasn’t closed. But we would listen to the announcements on the radio, anxiously waiting to hear the name of our school. The announcers would read the names of all the area schools that were closed for the day and the list would be updated every 15 minutes or so. I can’t even tell you how disappointed my brother and I were when schools all around us were closed but ours remained open. But on those mornings that we heard the name of our school announced, we were absolutely thrilled. Usually, school clothes would immediately come off, winter clothes would be put on and we would head outside to play in the snow. Then, as I got older and became a high school student, snow days just became days that I could stay home and watch TV or practice guitar. Not as whimsical as when I was younger, but still fun!
There is no representation for Wales, whose flag contains a dragon, which I think would be an amazing addition to my home nations flag.
You might had just read the United States in the above list and been confused. The Union Jack and the Star Spangled Banner that America uses have the same colors but they don’t look alike. Well, the United States first flag, called the Grand Union Flag was based on the Union Jack, and it’s design has been left seen in Hawaii’s national flag. So as you can see the Union Jack flag is a historically important flag.
So, Valentine’s Day in the US may sound a bit like White Day to you, the day in Japan when the man buys gifts for the woman. This is definitely true, they are very similar. The main difference between our two countries is that we don’t have a day like Japanese Valentine’s Day. There is no romantic holiday where women are expected to buy gifts or chocolate for men. We have Valentine’s Day on February 14th where the man is expected to buy gifts for his wife or girlfriend, but no opposite holiday! Basically, a man can expect to receive gifts on Christmas or his birthday and that’s about it.
