Hello!NOVA盛岡南イオン校です(*´▽`*)
節分を過ぎても厳しい寒さが続きますが、体調にはお変わりございませんか?
今回は期間限定で八戸校から来てくれています、イギリス人講師のGreg先生からメッセージをいただきました
Hi there, everyone! This is Greg! To all of you who have taken my lessons over the past few short months, thank you dearly!
Each and every one of you, your stories and your jokes have made my time in Morioka amazing.
I hope that I can get the chance to meet you all again. This is not farewell!
That said, I do have a short story for you: “The time Greg slipped.”As some of you may know, I used to live in Sapporo – not the snowiest place in Japan, but maybe the iciest. And, in the last dregs of winter, on a high-up Oyachi hillside verge, the ice was really starting to pile up. It was up to 40cm thick in some places and the snow ploughs just kept on piling more and more snow onto the already frost-laden sidewalks.
In short, whenever I had to go out into that winter-blasted land, I felt like Amundsen and Scott travelling Antarctica. So, I set out. Onwards to MaxValu!
The first 100 meters were uneventful, the next 100 meters too! “This is fine,” I thought, as I tripped and tore open my boots on a branch. “Well, I’m halfway there! What else could possibly go wrong!” I thought. These are the most dangerous words in any language!
—————————————————-I crossed at a traffic light, the pavement was encased in so much ice that a small stairway had been carved out to allow walkers to get from the road to the sidewalk.
I walked into MaxValu, boot leather flapping in the snow, and promptly found my legs in the air and my arms on the floor. The snow had hardened onto the bottom of my shoes. This combined with the polished supermarket floor made my feet allergic to floor, so they ran away from it as fast as possible. In short, I slipped.
“Well, I’m already at the supermarket! What else could possibly go wrong!” I thought. I had not learned from my mistake.
—————————————————————-
I waited for my boots to thaw, and bought my groceries: my eggs, my milk, my bread and more. I paid and I left the store. Everything was in its proper place; my wallet was in my pocket, my groceries were in my bags. So, I started walking away in my holey shoes, my embarrassment obvious to all.
400 meters remaining. 300 meters remaining. 200 meters, 150 meters, 125 meters… “Nothing could possibly go wrong,” I thought as I slipped on the staircase, the bottom fell off of my shoes, I crushed my eggs and hit my head on a car bonnet.
I made it home. At least nothing else could have possibly gone wrong.
