Culture Differences and Similarities between Japan and the UK

Having lived in Japan for a while now, I started to notice quite a few similarities, and differences, between Japan and my home, the UK. Some of them may apply to other countries too but some, I feel, are quite uncommon. I found these connections between Japan and the UK fascinating, and maybe worth writing a blog about.
I think the connections start with the similar histories. Both are very old countries, steeped in ancient traditions and beautiful architecture, and with this age comes the variations in dialects, regional identities, and outlooks on life. Japan and Tokyo are very similar places, with quite similar reputations, “The people are cold and always in a rush in London/Tokyo.”, I’ve heard this sentence often, and while I don’t think this is necessarily always true, there is definitely a correlation between the friendliness of the people increasing as you get further away from both capital cities. The idea of some stranger starting a conversation with you on a train in both cities is alarming to many, whereas in my hometown its quite common.
The UK and Japan are both island countries, meaning they’re cut off from the mainland of the continent, and their cultures developed as such. Sometimes this manifests in charming traits that are considered very Japanese or very British, but sometimes it appears in less positive ways, like fear of outsiders, which I think both lands have in common.
Formality and a lack of direct communication/confrontation are also traits both nations share. What is considered good manners in England, may be too indirect or roundabout for the US, and vice versa. The people of Britain, much like Japan, don’t usually like to show when they are upset, especially in public situations or social interactions, and they also like to tease/make fun of their friends often, for other nations it can sometimes seem too much.
Now, one of the key differences in manners between the two lands, is related to shoes. I’ve had many people in Asia ask me about why we wear shoes indoors, “Isn’t it dirty?” and I have to say, after spending time here, I completely agree. The UK operates on an ‘ask before coming in` basis. Before we enter someone’s house we will check if they’d like us to take our shoes off. Some will say yes, and we’ll happily oblige, but some will say no, and we will gladly oblige them too. My grandma, for example, tells us we don’t need to take our shoes off in her house, but my aunt, will always make sure everyone enters shoe-less into her home, or dire consequences will ensue.
When I was younger I didn’t think anything of wearing my shoes indoor, but now I always need to take my shoes off, in any country I’m in.

Trip to Kansai

A university friend came to visit Japan from the UK recently. It was his first time in Japan and his first time in Asia, so it was my turn to play the role of tour guide.
As a UK native, my friend obviously loves football, so after picking him up from the airport and resting for a few hours, we headed to Saitama stadium to watch Urawa Reds vs Ganba Osaka. The atmosphere was incredible and we really didn’t expect it. It felt like watching a game in Europe. We both left feeling really impressed with the intensity and volume of the fans there.
The next day we headed to Kansai. First stop was Osaka for three days. We did the standard tourist itinerary: Dotonbori, USJ and Osaka Castle. It was a great time, but I’m not the biggest fan of crowded places, so, next time I want to find quieter and more local places in Osaka, and avoid the crowds as much as I can.
After Osaka, we headed to Kyoto for four days, visiting many temples, watching a Maiko (舞妓) performance, and hiking around Fushimi Inari (伏見稲荷大社) at midnight, which for me was the highlight of the trip as we saw many wild boar (イノシシ), something I hadn’t seen in japan before and something I didn’t expect to see so close to Kyoto city.
From Kyoto we did day trips to Nara and Kobe. Kobe was a city I had no expectations about, but the calm and relaxed atmosphere, great food and great city view from Mt Rokko (六甲山) meant it was another highlight of the trip for me.
After our week-long trip in Kansai we headed back to Tokyo, and my friend enjoyed Kanto as much as he could before heading back to the UK to sort through his 3000 photos of Japan, in my opinion I didn’t think it was possible to take this many photos in 10 days, but somehow he managed it, it was probably the most impressive thing I witnessed since moving to Japan.

My name is Harrison and I am from England.

I was born in the English Countryside in a place called Devon, but from 2016 to 2023 lived in a city called Bristol before I moved to Tokyo.

Being English, I love all kinds of sports, football, boxing, rugby, cricket I love them all! I think England is a beautiful country and have travelled all over it so if you have any questions I will be more than happy to answer them.

I am still very new in Japan but have had a fantastic time exploring Tokyo and am always looking for new places to visit – so please give me recommendations!
I also love ramen – every kind! So if you know any good ramen shops, I would love to hear about them too.

今回の担当は温和な人柄と丁寧なレッスンで大人気の、
ドイツ語のMirko先生です🤩

今回は英語とドイツ語の併記仕様でお届け🎁
中々ドイツ語に触れる機会のない方も、ぜひチャレンジしてみてくださいねo(*°▽°*)o

My spring trip went to the beautiful Kamakura! It was very convenient to get there by train, so it is perfect for everyone who is looking for a quick nature break. I went there together with a japanese friend, who was born close to Kamakura. First we went to a forest where there was quite a lot of bamboo. We stopped at the nearby Hokokuji temple. We then made our way to the city and strolled through the Komachi Dori street, where we looked at many small shops with a lot of sweets and small souvenirs.

We ate some soba noodles, which were very tasty! My friend said that Kamakura is also famous for shirasu, since it is close to the sea. But since I do not like seafood that much, I did not follow her recommendation. Right as the sun set, we arrived at the great Buddha and I snapped a wonderful picture. It was a great trip and it will be a wonderful memory.

 

Meine erste Reise im Frühling ging nach Kamakura. Es ist nicht weit von Tokio entfernt und eignet sich daher perfekt für alle, die eine kleine Pause in der Natur suchen. Ich ging zusammen mit einer Freundin dorthin, die in der Nähe von Kamakura aufgewachsen ist. Zuerst gingen wir in einen nahegelegenen Bambuswald. Wir machten einen kurzen Stopp am Hokokuji Tempel. Danach machten wir uns au in Richtung der Stadt und schlenderten durch die Komachi Dori Strasse, wo wir viele kleine Läden anschauten, in denen es Süßigkeiten und Souvenirs gab.

Wir haben Soba gegessen und es war sehr lecker! Die Freundin sagte, dass Shirasu in Kamakura berühmt ist, weil die Stadt nahe am Meer liegt. Aber da ich keine Meeresfrüchte mag, habe ich diese Empfehlung dankend abgelehnt. Genau als die Sonne unterging, sind wir an der großen Buddhastatue angekommen und ich habe eine schönes Bild gemacht. Es war ein toller Ausflug und es wird eine großartige Erinnerung sein.
