I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside

“I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside” is a very well-known and loved British music hall song written in 1907 and has been sung by countless singers over the years. It expresses the joy of the historic British working-class tradition of spending a summer vacation or weekend trip at one of the UK`s many beach town resorts. I remember my mother and grandmother singing this song often while showing me adorable black and white photos of their youth spent near the sea.

Although the Great British Summer is famously not very pleasant (drizzly, cloudy, rarely sunny), I have such fond and nostalgic memories of going to the seaside on those rare nice days. My favorite place to visit was Southend-on-Sea. It had (and still has) the largest pier in Europe, filled with small arcades, pubs (often filled with people singing along to British and Cockney music hall music), bowling alleys, souvenir shops, greasy spoon cafes, donut stalls, fish and chip stands, and many ice cream vans.

I think so many of my favorite things to in Japan when hanging out with my friends reflect my happy times beside the seaside when I was younger: going to game centers, playing billiards and darts, singing karaoke, enjoying a beer on the beach and visiting small amusement parks. There`s a pure, simple, summery joy in all of these that is so close to my heart.

British Seaside Vocabulary

Pier – A long wooden structure that extends from the shore into the sea. It usually features cafes, food stands, small arcades and souvenir shops.

Deckchair – A lightweight portable chair with a foldable wooden frame and a fabric seat, usually with a stripy pattern. Made so sunbathers can move easily to the spots with the most sun, or away from the sea when the tide comes in.

Punch and Judy – A traditional puppet show often performed in British seaside resorts during the summer.

99 Flake – A soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone topped with a Cadbury chocolate flake.

Popeye – A soft-serve vanilla ice cream cone topped with an ice lolly. This absolutely ridiculous creation is unique to the south of England.

Donkey rides – A popular activity in British seaside resorts – riding a small donkey (a small, sturdy member of the horse family, historically used to carry heavy things) along the beach.

Chip butty – The thing I miss most about the UK. A buttered bread roll filled with chip shop chips. Deliciously unhealthy.

L’ete est arrive soudainement, vous ne trouvez pas ? Une semaine de pluie puis soudainement l’ete arrive ! Incroyable

L’ete est probablement la saison prefere des francais puisqu’il y a les vacances ! De tres tres longues vavance pour les etudiants (environ 2 a 3 mois) mais aussi pour les employes puisqu’un grand nombre de francais prennent 2 a 3 semaines de vacances

En France, pour les vacances, il est tres populaire d’aller dans le Sud de la france, vers Marseille. Il y a la mer, il fait beau, il fait chaud. On peut voir de magnifique paysages, manger une glace en se promenant dans les petits villages du sud ou encore bronzer sur la plages (en parlant de bronzer, j’ai attrape beaucoup de coup de soleil en allant a disney recemment donc faites attention).

Marseille et Nice sont des villes populaires pour partir en vacance mais pas seulement puisque les francais adorent visiter des petits villages. Aussi, dans le sud on peut trouver des petites villes dont les habitants triples voir quadruples pendant les vacances du a l’affluence de touriste. Par exemple , une ville comme saint-tropez (tres populaire en france) compte 3500 habitants pendant l’annee mais le nombre de touriste peut aller jusqu’a 80 000 pendant l’ete. Incroyable !

In Deutschland sind die Sommerferien von Bundestland zu Bundestland unterschiedlich. Allgemein sind sie aber ungefaehr 1 bis 2 Monate lang und Fangen im Juli an. Deutsche sind bekannt dafuer, dass sie haeufig reisen. Meistens reisen sie innerhalb Europas, wie z.B: Spanien, Italien oder in die Alpen. Da alle Menschen gleichzeitig in den Urlaub fahren, sind die Autobahnen ueberfuellt und es gibt jede Menge Staus. Sie muessen sich aufs warten einstellen, wenn sie zu dieser Zeit unterwegs sind.

In Germany, the summer holidays vary from state to state. Generally, however, they are about 1 to 2 months long and start in July. Germans are known to travel a lot. Mostly they travel within Europe, such as Spain, Italy or the Alps. Since everyone goes on holiday at the same time, the motorways are overcrowded and there are lots of traffic jams. You have to be prepared to wait if you are travelling at this time.

We, ourselves, may often say, “I like this,” or “I don’t like this,” as if fate has chosen our preferences for us. We cling to what is easy for one or more of our senses and discard other choices on the same whim. What is that from? Is hereditary, or a mix of our social configuration that forces those preferences that we echo? I think there is more to it and a choice as well. When I was in highschool I wanted to enjoy Japanese culture but when I tasted green tea and seaweed for the first time I gagged. I couldn’t handle it. There were no tastes that I was familiar with and I associated the flavors with things that were not edible or safe to consume. As immpossible as it was at first I didn’t quit. I took preference to them. Any chance at them I would choose those things I did not like and consume them lightly until I could understand what made them so delicious and my mind would ask for them by recall. I think of it like a reationship with a friend.
The best friends in life are not always the ones a person immediately sees eye-to-eye with. The best friends, I beleive, challenge one to grow and to enjoy things once hated and make those same things the ones you look forward too. I take all the qualities of that friend and think of them highly and important. I think of their needs and preferences and I make them my own. I try hard to make their preferences more important than my own. I enjoy every bit of time I get with them that way. I think that’s what firends are supposed to do. That is the same thing that happened to my flavor pallet.
Food tastes better than ever before when I began to chose what I like. The most interesting flavors are wrappedup inside the things I once hated, but now would prefer over anything else without hesitation. I now love green tea more than any other beverage and the bitter sweet flavor of matcha is the height of that discovery. Though, negatively, I think I have become a bit of a snob in my preferences of tea. Every savory dish tastes better with seaweed. Maybe you too could try this out, and take hold of your preferences, choose your pallet and enjoy the complexity of more things than ever before in a world with a wider canvas.

Tanabata was born from the legend of Orihime and Hikoboshi.

Hikoboshi and Orihime, two lovers, would be allowed to meet each other at the shores of the heavenly river.

The moment would take place on the night of July 7th in the lunisolar calendar.

Tanabata started to celebrate their once-a-year-reunion.

On the night of 7th July of every year, people write their wishes on colorful paper strips and hang them on bamboo leaves.

皆さまは海外に行かれた時に、現地の方々が雨なのに傘をさしていないことを不思議に思ったことはありませんか？

本日はイギリス出身の講師Joeがイギリス人が傘を差さない理由を教えてくれました😆

Why do British people not like using umbrellas?

Rainy season is due to hit Japan any moment now, so I am reminded of a question I am often asked by my confused co-workers and students: “Why don’t you have an umbrella????”.

The answer is simple. I am British, and British people hate umbrellas. Or “brollies”, as we like to call them.

But why? The United Kingdom famously gets rain showers very regularly all year round, often unexpectedly – so why are we so happy to get wet? This is what I think:

1. The climate in the UK means that most rain showers are much lighter than the kind of heavy and humid rain you experience in Japan. They usually don`t last as long too, so even if you get wet, you can usually dry off quite quickly.

2. Rain is very unpredictable in the UK. It can suddenly start raining on any day of the year, regardless of what the weather forecast says. It can also suddenly stop raining, or not rain at all. Rather than go to the effort of bringing a brolly we don’t end up needing, we would usually prefer to just take the risk and leave it at home.

3. Umbrellas are not sold in most shops! Unlike Japan, convenience stores in the UK very rarely sell umbrellas and we would usually have to go to a special outdoor clothing store or a specialist accessories store to get one. Because of this, they are usually not cheap!

4. London, in particular, is a very busy city with a lot of pedestrian traffic, and a hectic rush hour on the Tube. British people tend to want to avoid causing anyone else inconvenience, so we don’t want to get in anyone’s way while carrying a massive umbrella.

5. British people are known for having a “stiff upper lip”, which means not letting small problems bother you and just pushing through it.

Myself, and many others, find that the inconvenience of carrying an umbrella is greater than the issue of maybe getting a little wet. This has always stayed with me, and even during Japan’s heavy rainy season, I rarely want to carry an umbrella!

Or, to cut a long story short – it’s easier to just put your hood up, and we are too lazy to carry an umbrella 😉
