Winter Camping.
As many of you know, if you know me at all, camping has long been part of who I am. It is something that has been close to my heart since childhood, not as a pastime, but as a way of returning to myself.
There is a quiet dignity in self-reliance. To stand in the midst of nature, with only your knowledge, your hands, and the natural world, accepting whatever conditions present themselves, is deeply grounding.
Personally, I am drawn to a form of camping that is deliberately simple, almost austere. Building shelter, gathering firewood, crafting tools, sourcing and preparing food. Nothing excessive nor ornamental for me, Just what is necessary. Within this simplicity, there is honesty and reflects how our ancestors once lived; not comfortably, but attentively.
In the modern age, much of what is called “camping” has drifted far from this spirit. What was once rooted in skill and awareness has become softened by excess, often reduced to aesthetics and convenience. Here in Japan, camping can feel less like an engagement with nature and more like a performance within it. Glamping, in particular, seems to remove the very conditions that give meaning to being outdoors and at the will of nature.
Yet Japan, for all its modernity, still offers something rare and uncompromising: winters with deep snow and in the right places absolute stillness. Removed from the metropolis of the city it’s still possible to find landscapes stripped of excess. In the north winter camping is not forgiving, but it is honest. The cold demands humility while silence asks for attention. That attention may just be the reflections of days gone by, or even just the tranquility of solitude. Yet when you cast your eyes to the mountains you find that the snow covered mountains and forests embody wabi-sabi, a beauty found not in abundance, but in restraint, impermanence, and quiet endurance.
There is also the impermanence of mono no aware in winter landscapes: an awareness that nothing lasts. The snow melts, the silence gives way to the call of the birds and the sounds of an energetic spring. Precisely for the reason these fleeting moments carry weight. Standing alone in such conditions reminds you of just how small you are, of your fragility, and at the same time, your resilience. Making the warmth of home feel earned, not assumed.
This is why winter camping matters to me. It is not about hardship for its own sake, nor about proving strength. It is about stripping life back until only the essentials remain. In that space…cold, quiet, and honest, you are given the rare opportunity to look inward. To cast aside the hustle and bustle of modernity, the challenge is to find peace, reflect without distraction, and rediscover who you are at your most vulnerable, naked in the eyes of Mother Nature.
