I come from Ireland, it’s an island that’s about the same size as Hokkaido in the west of Europe. We are famous for our green fields and beautiful scenery as well as our music and poetry. We are probably most famous for our alcohol though. Guinness is one of the most recognisable and popular beers in the world and whiskey was first distilled in Ireland (in fact, the word whiskey comes from the Irish word uisce, which means water).
But it’s been a long time since I lived in Ireland, after I left university, I went to the Middle East and worked in the oil and gas industry… it was interesting work, but very hot and a lot of sand! Following on from that I moved to the UK and became the third generation of my family to work on the railways! I worked on a lot of projects around London, including the new Elizabeth line, and spent many nights in the tunnels of the tube.
In my free time I enjoy cooking (and eating of course!) I eat out regularly with friends to try out new dishes and cuisines that I can try to recreate at home. But it has been difficult recently as my apartment has the smallest kitchen in the entire world. Having a large kitchen is one thing that I’ve missed since moving to Japan. Irish people love to invite their friends to their homes and feed them and that can be difficult in a 1K apartment.
But there are plenty of things that I enjoy in Japan. My friend and I are currently working on a project to eat in every Tokyo ramen shop that’s mentioned in the Michelin Guide, we’ve eaten in a lot already and each one has been truly delicious.
I look forward to meeting you in an English lesson, I’d love to hear about your hobbies and collections. I love talking about food so I’d be delighted to swap recipes or get some restaurant/izakaya recommendations and hear about what you
Hello! I’m Matthew, I’m from London in the UK! I was born in New Zealand, Auckland! My birthday is August 29th!
I used to live near Abbey Road! Everyday in Junior High School I had to walk past it. There are so many tourists there and many people from Japan too! Please visit sometime, but be careful of the rainy weather!
I love food from all around the world! In the case of Japanese food, I love sushi, sashimi, yakisoba, and tempura the best! I also really like bread and sweets so please recommend me some! I can eat almost anything, but I don’t enjoy eating tomatoes. They have a watery taste to me.
As for my hobbies, reading, writing, drawing, and boxing probably come up first. I enjoy making stories and love books! I draw characters for children when I can, and for boxing I want to have more competitions! Oh, I also enjoy playing all types of games! Video games, board games, card games, you name it, I probably play it!
I studied history in university and love to hear about different times and cultures. Please educate me about the history of Japan if you get the chance! I really love ancient history, the world from thousands of years ago is truly fascinating.
I had classes where I had to try to make items the way the people of the past did it. It was really hard! All I could make was dice!
My father used to be a pilot, so I’ve been to quite a few countries and a lot of Asia. The world is a big and interesting place and I hope English can help you explore all its delights and mysteries.
Thanks for choosing NOVA and I hope to teach you as much as I can!
