The cat’s out of the bag.

 

What do you think this means? It’s very tricky to guess if you don’t know it already.

The cat’s out of the bag doesn’t have anything really to do with cats, or bags.

Instead we’re talking about secrets.

Imagine the cat is a secret and you’ve been hiding it in a bag.

 

One day, it escapes and runs around all over the place, so everyone sees it.

It’s not a secret anymore because everyone can see it.

 

Therefore the cat’s out of the bag means “the secret is out”.

「南アフリカと日本の文化」

の似ているところを教えてもらったよ😃😃😃

South Africa is the land of the rainbow🌈, home to the world’s best rugby team🏉.

I noticed that countries in Asia and Africa have very similar cultures.

In Japan, both hands are used to give or give something to someone as a sign of respect.

In South Africa, your left hand holds your right wrist as a sign of respect when you give someone something.

In rural South Africa, you wouldn’t walk past an elderly person without saying hello✋.

In the city, no one cares, but this is also common in Japan.

In April and December we visit our deceased loved ones.

The Japanese also do this in August.

しかし夜は意外に涼しいのでちょっとびっくりです✨

Japanese rain, is often quite heavy.

In fact, it is so heavy that in England we would say

“It`s raining cats🐈 and dogs🐶.”

As a result, umbrellas are much less common in the UK than in Japan.

When rain is light, just a jacket is fine.

But when rain is heavy, you need an umbrella or your clothes will get soaked.🌂🧥

It`s also usually a lot more windy when it rains in the UK, and an umbrella is no good in the wind.

今日は前回の “l” and  “r”　の続きをAlastair先生に教えてもらいましたよ❣❣❣

The solution is to focus on how your mouth moves for each of these sounds.

For perfect pronunciation, you need to learn the correct mouth movement,

then practice it until it becomes natural, and then check your pronunciation

every now and then when speaking to see if you can feel your mouth moving

in the right way.

 

For the English “l” sound, you want to move your tongue further forward.

It should be touching the back of your gums, just above your teeth.

Try holding your tongue behind your top teeth and using your voice for

two seconds.

If your tongue is in the right position, you will make a long “l” sound.

Today we’re going to look at common pronunciation mistakes people here make when speaking English.

The most obvious example is the letters “l” and “r”.
In Japanese, the “ra, ri, ru, re, ro” set of sounds are very similar to both of these and it is tempting to simply use these for both “l” and “r”.

 

However, this has two problems.

 

Firstly, this leads to very different words sounding the same.

 

A previous teacher here liked to compare the word “lice” with the word “rice”,
for example (lice is an insect that makes your hair itchy and rice is food).

 

Secondly, this leads to incorrect pronunciation of both sounds.

The consonant sound in “ra, ri, ru, re, ro” is actually halfway between an “r” sound and an “l” sound, so the sound will be slightly wrong for both “lice” and “rice”.

 

So what should I do?

Let’s cut to the chase –

“let’s move to the most interesting/most important thing”.

This is also often used to quickly move a conversation or presentation onto the main topic.

 

It comes from films –

car chases are often the most exciting part of a film, so if you cut to the chase you’re quickly ending a boring scene and moving onto the exciting car chase.

 

Nowadays, however, it’s common in normal conversation and often used in interviews.

Many are understood across the English-speaking world, but some are more local to specific English-speaking countries and people from other countries may not immediately recognize or even understand them.

Even so, they can be fun to learn, feel nice to use and can help make your English sound much more fluent if used correctly.

Without further ado, let’s look at some of them, starting with the phrase that started this sentence.

Without further ado – “without saying anything else”.

 

This is often used to quickly move a conversation or presentation onto the main topic, especially when followed by a suggestion using “let’s”, like in the paragraph above.

(Please note, it sounds quite old fashioned to some people but is still used by people like academics and so on).　”

”Now that it’s getting a bit warmer I wanted to talk about cycling.🚴

 

Firstly, here in Japan it is normal to see lots of cyclists going along the pavement, but in the UK this is not allowed for adults.🚳

 

Children may cycle on the pavement, but adults have to ride on the road or on cycle lanes.

 

As such, a bike helmet is a good idea when cycling in the UK!👷⛑👷”

以前私はコロナ渦の時に自転車で2時半かけてディズニーランド(の入口…)まで

I’m from England, my hometown is a small market & farming town called Ormskirk.

When I first came to Japan, I was so amazed by Tokyo, I had never seen so many lights and people, I was used to a quiet life.

One of my favourite things about Japan is the onsen culture, it doesn’t exist in England, however one thing Japan and England do have in common is a love for being polite.

I have found everyone to be very kind here.

寒い時期の温泉は何故心まで温まるのでしょうね♨
