Hello everyone!

When I was young, my family would always go on vacation in the South of England once a year.

One year, my parents had forgotten to discuss where we were going on holiday that year.

My father said one night “Alright, let’s start packing for tomorrow. I’ve already arranged for time off of work, and your are all on summer vacation. Let’s go on holiday”

My mother said “Hang on a moment! We haven’t even decided where we’re going!”

Sometimes my father is a little spontaneous.

Hello everyone!

Recently, my friend came and visited me from England. He hasn’t really done much travelling before, and, to be quite honest, it was a complete surprise for me that he came to Japan. I panicked and had to prepare for his arrival within a very short period of time, just a few hours! But I managed to clean up enough for him to have somewhere to sleep for the time he needs somewhere to sleep.

Yesterday, I took him to Nara, to see the temples and museums in the area. On the way there, we had a long conversation about how impressive some aspects of Japan are, for example, how clean the trains are, and how easy it is to get from place to place.

When we visited Toudaiji, he was amazed by the scale of the structure. He said “It must have taken a great level of organization to get such a structure built”, and when we learnt about the amount of people it took to build it, I had to agree.

We left Nara in the afternoon, and I regret that I didn’t buy what I wanted to buy (a new tea bowl), but I did buy a fridge magnet from one of the museum gift shops.

We finished the day by going to my favorite restaurant chain, Torikizoku! My friend thought it was great, too.

Hi guys! I hope this blog finds you well. 

Let’s have a quick chat about art. I love art! I think it’s a great way for people to express themselves. These days, I’ve been really interested in street art. Do you know it? If you don’t know, it’s basically a painting or mural on the side of a building. Have you ever seen street art before? There are many different types and styles of paintings, which makes them very unique. 

Here’s one example:

I’m planning to visit Juso, Osaka to check out the artwork there. I’m sure you’ve heard of Juso, but did you know it’s home to many beautiful and unique street art? I recently learned that the town had invited graffiti artists from all over Japan and the world, to help refresh the area so more people would visit. Since there are so many paintings, I want to do a scavenger hunt to find all of the pieces of street art. I think it’d be super fun! If you’d like more information about this project, you can check out website and see a map of where all the pieces are located in Juso.

Hello everyone!

My name is Philip, and I’m the new teacher in the Kyoto area.

I’m from England, and I’ve been living in Japan since February 2019.

I was originally living in Hyogo, but now I live in Osaka. My home town is in Yorkshire, which is in the North of England.

My hobbies are hiking, visiting shrines and temples, finding and drinking different kinds of tea, and playing games.

Since it’s now autumn, I’d like to share a wonderful English cake from my home. It’s called “Parkin” and it tastes of ginger. It’s perfect for warming you up in the cold weather. Why don’t you try making it at home?

Also, we’re starting a new course this month! We call it “Doctor English”!

In this course, we aim to help you with the different grammar rules you may have learned in school, that aren’t always true! It’s really useful to improve your speaking skills and how fluent you sound!

Hi, I’m Jim from London in the UK!

Although I have been living and teaching English in Japan for a long time, I am a relatively new teacher to NOVA this time around! In fact,  I previously taught at NOVA back in 2002 for a number of years. I’m really happy to be back.

Before coming to Japan I used to work at the British Museum which is where I became deeply interested in Japanese history, art and culture. So when I first visited Kyoto in 2001, I knew straight away that I wanted to live here!

When I’m not teaching English I love to look after my bonsai trees, read and explore Kyoto with my old film camera.

I’m looking forward to meeting you soon!

dress up and go around the doors trick or treating. We would be given lots of sweets. Such nice memories!
