Adi’s plans for summer vacation
I’m really excited about Obon Week in August! I plan to explore various places around Japan and catch up with friends. There are so many stunning spots in Japan that I’ve been eager to visit, and this week will be the perfect opportunity to do so. I particularly love beaches and am especially looking forward to seeing the Uradome coast. Additionally, I’ve been longing to visit Kyushu to experience its beautiful beaches, mountains, and of course, to savor some authentic tonkotsu ramen! I’d love to hear about your vacation plans and any recommendations you might have!
What would you normally do in your home country?
When I’m back home, summer days are all about beach outings. Mornings kick off with leisurely walks and coffee runs, followed by packing up with friends for a full day at the shore. We spend hours swimming, reading, and soaking up the sun before heading home for dinner. Evenings are a blend of cooking together or dining out at a local seafood spot. After dinner, it’s a ritual to indulge in ice cream, then head back to the beach for sunset views and a cozy bonfire—a perfect end to the day!
When I’m not at the beach, I retreat to my family’s mountain home where the air is crisp and refreshing. Days are filled with adventure, including hiking, paddle boarding, golfing, kayaking, and games like pickleball or tennis. Trips to the lake always include a delightful stop for ice cream on the way home! Evenings are cherished moments of bonding over homemade grilled pizzas, followed by s’mores and either a favorite TV show or board games. It’s a perfect blend of excitement and relaxation, making the most of both the mountains and the coast.
How does Japanese summer vacation differ to your home country?
One major difference between summer vacations in Japan and my home country, the USA, is the weather. In Japan, summers are known for being intensely hot and humid, quite different from the typically cooler mornings and warmer days followed by cooler evenings in the northeastern USA. It’s even common to wear hoodies or sweaters in American summers.
Another notable distinction is the popularity of summer camps in the USA. During my childhood, I spent my summers at a sleep-away camp from late June to early August. There, I participated in sports, went swimming, did arts and crafts, and learned to cook various foods over an open fire. It was a cherished experience where I created lasting memories with close friends.
