英語の違いをご紹介いたします

Flat = Apartment
In the UK we say flat rather than apartment.
“I rent a flat in York.”
Lift = Elevator
We say lift rather than elevator.
“The lift is out of order.”
Ground floor = First floor
In UK buildings, the floor that is at street level is the ground floor, not the first floor like in America and Japan. The floor about the street level floor is the first floor. This is shown in an elevator with a button the has a “G” on it.
“Take the elevator down to the ground floor.”
Manual = Stick
When driving a car that does not use automatic gears, UK people will describe it as having manual gears, as opposed to the American “stick”
“I drive a manual Mini Cooper”
Rubbish = Trash
In the UK, people will use “rubbish” instead of “trash”. People will still use the word “garbage” however.
“I was asked to take out the rubbish” “Put that banana peel in the rubbish.”
Knackered = Tired
UK people will say the word “knackered” as a way to say they are tired from doing physically demanding things.
“I’m knackered from all that running.”
Chips = Fries
People in the UK say chips instead of fries. People may still say fries if they are talking about very thin chips that you might find at a fast food restaurant.
“I’d like some fish and chips, please.”
Crisps = Chips
Potato chips are called crisps in the UK. This word may be difficult for beginners to pronounce. the “sps” part of the word is similar to the sound of calling a cat to come toward you “pspspsps”
“I favourite crisps are barbeque flavour.”
Football = Soccer
UK people call the sport by its correct name, “football”. Often this word is reduced to “footy” when in a casual setting.
“Lets watch a football game.”
Biscuit = Cookie
UK people say “biscuit” instead of “cookie”. We do however say “cookie” for a very specific circular biscuit such as a chocolate chip cookie.
“All I found in the tin of biscuits was sewing stuff”
Car park = Parking lot
British people use the term “car park” rather than “parking lot”.
“I lost my keys in the car park.”
Windscreen = Windshield
The large front window of a car is referred to as the “windscreen” rather than “windshield” in the UK
“There’s a crack in my windscreen.”
Bloke = Dude
Bloke is used instead of dude when casually referring to a man.
“He’s a strange bloke.” “He’s a nice bloke”
Faffing = Lollygagging
The act of wasting time, or standing around doing nothing is referred as “faffing” or “faffing about” in the UK, whereas “lollygagging” is used in the US.
“Stop faffing about and get over here.”
