What do you do for lunch? Do you pick something up from the convenience store? Or do you bring a bento box with you to work?
Recently, I have been making bento boxes to bring with me to work. It gives me a great sense of accomplishment when I create my bento and have my lunch for the next day already prepared.
When I was working in America I would usually just take a sandwich and a bag of potato chips to work with me.
But here in Japan, I’ve been trying really hard to diversify my lunch meals. In the past month I’ve cooked and prepared some pesto pasta, Mapo eggplant, tamagoyaki, yakisoba, pork with tare barbecue sauce, and fried fish.

Traveling is one of my hobbies. One of the most wonderful cities that I’ve been able to visit is New York.

NYC is a big and crazy city with so many things to do. If you spent a whole month touring New York you’d still want more time. Below is a list of my top 3 things to do.

1. Visit the top of the Rockefeller.
The view of New York from the top of this building is incredible. If you get the chance visit during sunset for some incredible photo opportunities. If you’re not interested in the Rockefeller there are many rooftop bars around the city that offer just as incredible views.

2. Spend a Day in Central Park.
This park is massive. There is so so much to do and so much to see its difficult to list everything. Central Park has food carts everywhere so you don’t even have to leave to grab a bite to eat.

3. Watch a Show on Broadway.
There is nothing more New York than Broadway. Any show you choose will be guaranteed to be a fun and fantastic time. If you’re worried about following the story, watching an already famous musical is a good idea. For example: Phantom of the Opera, Lion King, or even Frozen!

New York is a wonderful city with so many things to discover.

Aloha!
To cool down over the summer break, I went to eat shaved ice. However, this was the first time I ate plum and ginger flavored shaved ice. It was both sweet ad sour at the same time, which made for a very interesting combination.

The Hawaiian word for “delicious” is “ono.” So the next time you eat something delicious, you can say “That was ono!”

本日はカナダ出身の講師JaysonにSea turtles(ウミガメ）について色々と話してもらいました💙

Sea turtles are one of my favorite animals. They are large and gentle and so incredibly beautiful. I have been lucky enough to see them in Hawaii and also in Okinawa.

For over 100 million years these beautiful animals have lived in the oceans. This means that they once lived with dinosaurs! Sea turtles eat sea grass and jellyfish and can reach up to a size of 1.8 meters. The leatherback is the largest sea turtle and can weigh up to 900 kg. They often move to beaches to lay eggs and baby sea turtles hatch after 60 – 80 days. It takes 10 years for a baby sea turtle to become an adult and they can live up to 100 years! Sea turtles are excellent swimmers and can hold their breath for up to 5 hours underwater. They travel up to 12,000 km every year between almost all of the world’s oceans.

I hope one day you can see and experience sea turtles. But remember, you should always respect them and allow them to eat and lay their eggs. If you get too close they will get scared and won’t be able to eat or make cute little baby turtles!

Hi, my name is Lance.
I’m from beautiful sunny Miami, Florida. I encourage you to go to Miami so that　you can enjoy the beaches and the amazing Latin food.
My hobbies include listening to K-pop and hip hop dancing.
I also like to cook and drink tapioca. Recently, I’ve been cooking a lot of Mapo Tofu and Kimchi fried rice.
I just moved to Tokyo from Kagoshima where I was an English teacher for 4 years. I love everything about Kagoshima such as the beautiful view of Sakurajima, Keihan, and all of the friendly people who live there.
I decided to move to Tokyo because I wanted to try something new. So far everything in Tokyo has been great. I like to try all of the different tapioca places throughout Tokyo. My favorites include Gongcha and honey jasmine milk tea from Chatime.

ところで「残暑」って英語でどのように伝えればいいのでしょう❓

残暑というものがあまりないという国出身の方でも、夏の暑さが長引いているのだなというのは理解してもらえるはずです。

もし会話中に「残暑」ってなんて言うのだっけ・・・とお困りになった時には

でも十分に相手には伝わるはずです😆

日本語と同じように、英語でも表現の仕方は様々です。

8月も後半になりましたが、まだまだ暑い日が続きますね💦

昼間はもちろん夜もなかなか気温が下がらず、熱帯夜が毎日続いています。。

熱帯夜をそのまま直訳すると”tropical night”

これはこれで不正解ではないようですが、そのままだと伝わりにくいようです。

より伝わりやすい言葉としては、以下のような言葉を使うと私たちの意味する『熱帯夜』に近いのではないでしょうか。

sultry night (蒸し暑い、焼けつくような）
sweltering night (うだるように暑い、汗だくの）

こういった言葉でなくとも

It’s hard to go to sleep because it’s too hot in the night.

簡単な単語を繋げるだけでも、暑くて眠れないほどの夜だったということが伝わりますね！

Coast・・・海岸
The typhoon is approaching the coast of Kyushu. （その台風は九州の沿岸に接近中です）

 Waves・・・波
I like watching the waves hit the shore．(私は波が海岸に打ち付けるのを見るのが好きだ)

Dock・・・波止場
Make a boat fast to a dock．(船着き場に舟をつなぐ)

Sunscreen・・・日焼け止めクリーム
I put on a lot of sunscreen．(日焼け止めをたくさん塗ります)

Sunbathing・・・日光浴
They are sunbathing　during the day．(彼らは昼間に日光浴をしています)

Obon

Two years ago for Obon I went down to Kagoshima to visit my girlfriend’s family for the first time. I was a little anxious, especially because my Japanese speaking ability is poor, but I needn’t have worried, they were very welcoming and friendly. They gave me a lot of food, they drove me around and we did our best to talk to each other.
Last year I didn’t have enough money to go again during Obon. Flights are expensive aren’t they. I can’t remember what I did, probably a lot of nothing.
This year, Obon 2020, I guess I’ll have to stay in Tokyo and avoid travelling around much. You know why. At Nova we have 5 days off, from the 10th to the 15th. I would like to go for a walk in the forest for some natural healing and rejuvenation, and I’m sure that I’ll find time to visit the onsen. But I guess I’ll be spending most of the time in my apartment.
I’ve downloaded a lot of books so I should spend some time looking at them. I also recently bought a TV so I’ll probably look at that, too. I’m thinking of moving to a new apartment this year so I’ll be looking through apartments on the suumo website. And I’ll rest, relax and recuperate.
I hope your Obon is good, whatever you do.
