How voting works at elections in Australia (Queensland)

Recently, a big portion of news in Japan has been focusing on the election of the next Tokyo Governor. Along with the news of the election, I have also seen a number of advertisements to encourage people to go vote. This has been somewhat interesting to me as we do not see this type of advertisements in Australia.

Why? Well because voting is compulsory in Australia – not optional.

First this law applies to all who are eligible to vote. That is, people who are Australian citizens over the age of 18. Hence when there is any type of election to select the next person in power, we receive a letter informing us of the next upcoming voting day and venue. To help those who have difficulty voting , there are various methods to vote apart from voting in person on the specific day. We can apply for early voting and postal voting through the government election website.

What happens if we don’t vote?
Well we receive a fine of $133.45 (for those in the Queensland state). That’s roughly 10000yen! Definitely not an amount that I would want to pay if I can avoid it by just going out to vote, which usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Now fortunately for someone like me who is living overseas, we can apply for postal voting or we also have the option to apply for exemption through the government election website.

That’s it for today’s quick explanation of how voting works in Australia. What do you think about this system? Do you think it’s a good idea or would you be against it? Let us know next time!

Hiroki

Lie, lie, lay.

The German language (Deutsch) has three verbs, which entered English many years ago, that bedevil speakers of English. No, I don’t mean students of E.S.L. – I mean native speakers!

a) lügen: to (tell a) lie
b) liegen: to lie (in bed/on the floor)
c) legen : to lay (place, put or sit) something in a certain palce or position.

In German there is no confusion and the different vowel sounds are kept almost unchanged, regardless of the tense. Now, look at the mess we made of these words in English.

a) lie lied lied
b) lie lay lain
c) lay laid laid

See if you can write sentences with these with these words used used correctly. WARNING! The average English teacher will give you a different answer, depending on where he or she comes from! (You’d be better off checking online…)

Regards,
Adam

🥧Pie & Mash 🥧

An Ode To Pie & Mash

Across the world, many people have heard of the famous British dish ‘Fish & Chips’, but today I’d like to tell you about my all-time favorite comfort food from my hometown in London’s East End: Pie & Mash.

Pie & Mash is a traditional working-class meal from East London and the London Docklands that has been enjoyed by Londoners since the 19th century. It consists of a delicious and heartwarming minced-beef and cold-water-pastry pie, served with mashed potato and sometimes jellied eels and covered in a wonderful sauce called ‘liquor’. Despite its name ‘liquor’ does not contain any alcohol, and is in fact made of parsley and fish stock, usually made from the water used for the preparation of the stewed eels. It is rich with flavor, filling and very comforting and my favorite food in the entire world.

It’s association with the working class comes from its affordable and readily available ingredients; pies being an easy food to transport; and eels being one of the few forms of fish that could survive London’s famously mucky and polluted River Thames in the Victorian era. To this day, people from all backgrounds love to enjoy a plate of pie and mash for a hearty lunch in London’s East End. I hope one day I can find a place in Japan that serves it!

Canada day is July 1st.
This day is to celebrate the day that Canada became an independent country.
In Canada we celebrate with family and friends.
We normally will have a BBQ, drink, and enjoy the fireworks.
This year I plan to still celebrate Canada Day.
I will eat maple syrup and pancakes for breakfast, poutine for lunch, and drink Canadian beer with dinner.
I look forward to celebrating!

ME WANT COOKIE

ME WANT COOKIE

What’s in a case?
In English case refers mostly to pronouns – the sentence above sounds funny to native speakers (perhaps because of the Cookie Monsters delivery) because it confuses the pronouns.
The two types of pronouns are the nominative (I, he, she, they, we and who) and the accusative (me, him, her, us and them).

Lets try some sentences and see if we can correct them. Change the colored words to correct the sentence:
Me Tarzan, you Jane.
Me didn’t do it.
・It was we that did it.
・We’ll share it between we.
・That belongs to she.
・It’s either they or us.
Her belongs to me.
・He doesn’t like I.
・My wife said its she or the dog.
・Won’t you come and join we?
Us were walking along and saw he sitting over there.

Next time we meet please introduce yourself to me like Tarzan!

Me Stuart, you student.

🎮Michael

Often when I meet students for the first time we talk about hobbies in our introductions. One of my hobbies is playing video games ,and sometimes that gets some strange looks! So today I want to talk about Japan, video games and me!

I think sometimes Japanese people don’t know how influential the Japanese video game industry is around the whole world.Of the 3 big video games consoles at the the moment, 2 are Japanese,Nintendo and Sony. In terms of game popularity around the world only USA has more than Japan, which I think is pretty amazing considering Japanese isn’t spoken much outside of Japan.

When I was a kid I played Japanese games without even knowing it, Mario and Sonic were so popular and Sega and Nintendo were dominant. The first time I really thought about Japan while gaming was playing a game called Shenmue. This game wasn’t in a fantasy world, it was set in a real world Japan and it was very different from anything Id played before.I loved it!

After this I started to discover I liked Japanese games more than American ones. I like games with stories and games like Final Fantasy were so interesting to me.I don’t really like shooting and killing all the time in my games and this was balanced better in Japanese games.

I learned a lot about Japan from games before I ever visited! You can learn a lot about attitudes and culture from art, literature etc and a good game can be both. Also, as games got more advanced you could learn more practical things too. For example the first time I came to Japan in 2013 and visited Akihabara I recognized many roads from the maps in a game I had played!

Recently I’ve been playing a game called Death Stranding by Kojima Hideo. It’s very strange! If I tried to explain it I would be here all day but it’s very interesting and fun.

See you soon! Mike

🏃Hiroki

Starting the day well

Hello everyone! Hope you’re all having a beautiful day. Today I want to share some of my daily habits that I implement in my mornings to help start the day off well, feeling more positive and ready to do my best!

1. Meditating
This is something I’ve started to do just recently but I found myself feeling less stressed and better able to handle my emotions if I start the morning with a moment of peace and quiet. You don’t need to make yourself sit down on the floor with your legs crossed like the zen masters. Instead, just spend a minute or two focusing on your breathing and “empty your mind”. We have more than enough things happening in our life at super speed so we can at least spend a couple of minutes at the start to reset.

2. Exercise
A short morning exercise will really help you shake off the drowsiness that might still linger after waking up. This could be done in the form of walking around the neighborhood, having a stretch in the living room, or maybe even a quick dance to some happy music. Exercise has been scientifically proven to help kickstart your brain and feel much more positive about the challenges that lie ahead in the day.

So this is just two of the daily habits that I do for most of my mornings. I do highly recommend that you try to implement this in your life too! Of course you can adjust this to ways that fits best for you. Some people might be able to go for a full 10km run every morning while others are better suited to try some simple 5 minute stretches. The most important thing is to find the right method that you can enjoy and consistently do everyday.
Good luck and have a great week/weekend!

Hiroki

Hiroki

meditating(瞑想)とexercise(運動)を長い時間使わなくていいのでやってみるといいよ、とのことですね。

🏡Michael

My Hometown

Today I want to tell you a little bit about my hometown of Nottingham in England.

I wasn`t born in Nottingham,I moved there when I was 9 years old from Zimbabwe. However it was where I grew up and will always be my hometown to me!

Nottingham is a city about 300km north of London. It`s not big like Tokyo or London,I`d say it`s probably about the same size as Hiroshima.

When people ask me about Nottingham I usually say it`s famous for 2 things. The first is that Robin Hood came from Nottingham.Robin Hood was an outlaw who it`s said stole from the rich to give to the poor. It`s a very famous story in England and there has been many movies and TV shows about him.Maybe the most famous movie starred Kevin Costner and Bryan Adams sang the theme song which was very successful! Many of Nottingham`s tourist attractions like Sherwood Forest and Nottingham Castle are from the Robin Hood story!

The second is Nottingham Forest Football Club. They`re not even in the Premier League now but 40 years ago we had the best soccer team in the world and won the European Cup and English League. The manager,Brian Clough,is very famous in the soccer world and there are statues of him in Nottingham.

Most of my growing up was done in Nottingham, and it`s still where most of my family lives.I hope I can go back for a holiday once flying is normal again!

Michael Antoniadis
