5am Karaoke

I’m not an amazing singer, but like a lot of people in Japan I really like karaoke. So far I’m pretty sure I have never turned down an offer to go, but it’s not like I go singing every week either. During golden week though I had lots of free time and probably overdid it a bit, but I certainly don’t regret singing until the first morning train. Earlier that night my friends and I met some new friends at the bar in Shibuya and we decided to do Karaoke together. We never do karaoke with total stranger in America, and certainly not real Japanese karaoke, so I felt really lucky to enjoy this kind of fun cultural thing here. Plus it’s always fun to flex my Japanese reading ability!

Yoyogi Ballers

Around when I first moved to Japan in early September, I decided to visit Yoyogi park on a whim. I was kindly welcomed into a group and invited to play a couple pickup basketball games. While I am pretty tall (181cm) I’m actually pretty horrible at basketball. It was nice to just enjoy the games and the hot weather of the late summer. Now sometimes I only watch the games for a bit, or just play for less than an hour, but nevertheless it is nice to be an honorary “Yoyogi baller”.

☕️ Penny’s Diner part 2

Choosing what to eat here was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. The menu is extensive, with options such as chili cheese burgers, locomoco burgers, fish burgers, Mexican burgers, Western burgers, and even fish burgers and more. And that was just the burgers! They also have buffalo wings, cheese fries, cheesey cheese fries, chili cheese fries, mexican fries, garlic shrimp fries, and even more. And after that, you can choose your milkshake too! They had Cheesecake blueberry cream cheese shakes, snickers shakes, oreo shakes, and others too. Everything sounded so amazing that I had to take a few minutes to decide what I wanted. After a significant amount of internal struggle, I finally decided on the locomoco burger, cheese fries, and a Coke. It was perfect. I made a huge mess while I was eating all of this. That’s how you know it’s a good burger. I don’t have the words to do the burger justice. My only regret is that I haven’t tried their milkshakes yet. I really recommend this place if you’re in the mood for some good burgers, good fries, and a good shake.

☕️ Penny’s Diner part 1

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a big fan of burgers and fries. So of course, no restaurant list of mine is complete without mentioning Penny’s Diner. It’s a classic American restaurant that I’m quite fond of. I found this place while I was walking around Minato Mirai a few years ago, and I’ve been a big fan ever since. The letters of the sign on the front of the building immediately stood out to me. The font they chose for the sign was very reminiscent of mid century diners back home, so I had to check it out. The interior matched the sign as well, it was decorated floor to ceiling with matching mid century décor. The posters on the wall included vintage food advertisements and pictures of Marilyn Monroe. The seats were bright red vinyl like you’d see in an old movie. Coca cola merchandise and advertisements topped the tables and adorned the walls. They even had a juke box! I really love stuff like this, and I’m glad the staff did too. When the interior looks this good, you just know the food is going to be good too.

☕️ Misaki Fish Market（三崎市場） part 2

When I finally got to sit down with my food, I noticed that the restaurant was silent. There was no music playing, and none of the customers were talking. You might not agree with me, but I actually prefer a silent restaurant. It allows me to relax and just focus on my food. All the seats are counter seats as well, so this place is perfect for someone who wants to eat alone. I was honestly surprised how comfortable this restaurant was. There was no small talk with the owner, no music constantly playing, no conversations from the customers, everything was clean, you can serve yourself for water, and you can return your tray at a separate counter. For someone shy like me, I was able to completely relax here. Of course, the food was delicious too. For the price, I was impressed with the size of the salmon pieces and the generous amount of rice in the bowl. I thought it was exactly what I wanted. In my opinion, a simple restaurant, with simple food and atmosphere, can’t be beat.

It seems that I’ve run out of new cafes to talk about at the moment, so I’d like to write a little about some restaurants too, if that’s okay. Typically, it’s a bit rare for me to go out to a restaurant by myself. However, if I have a break at work, going to a nice little restaurant makes my day a little more fun. Since I have a limited amount of time for my break, I’ll usually go to a quick and casual place. Recently, I went to Misaki Fish Market in Kawasaki. From the outside, it looks like a simple and straightforward seafood bowl restaurant. Simple and straightforward is exactly what I like the most! I’ve told a lot of students that gyudon is my favorite food in Japan. Maybe unsurprisingly, kaisendon is my second favorite! It seems that I enjoy any kind of meat on rice. At the restaurant, you can place your order from the ticket machine outside. I ordered the salmon bowl for 700 yen. Once you get your ticket, you can walk inside and sit down until your number is called. Then you can get your food from the counter and hand the owner your ticket. Actually, I had an embarrassing experience there on my first visit. I brought my ticket and just waited awkwardly at the counter. I was used to giving the staff the meal ticket first, and then sitting down. Don’t do that here.

まだ少し先のお話なのですが、残念ながらPatchがアメリカに帰国するため、まもなくNOVAを卒業することになります。アメリカで9月から高校の先生になって歴史を教えるそうですよ！！日本を離れるのは8月上旬なのですが、帰国前にご家族やお友達が来日される予定で、7月は一緒に旅行などする予定のため、NOVAでの最終出勤日は6/24(月)予定となっております。ただ、まだまだ1ヶ月以上あるので、お別れ前に、ぜひレッスン取ってあげてくださいね！

Thank you all for learning and chatting with me!

I moved from America in August, so this August marks a full year of being abroad. The time has definitely flown by for me, but I think that’s because I have had such a fun experience living in Japan. Besides all the great people I’ve met here, I know I’ll miss a lot of little things about daily life here. Whether it’s the jingles at the train stations, the ubiquity of vending machines, or enjoying all the unique food, there’s a lot to miss. Now is also good timing for me to move back home as our school year in America starts around the end of August. I’m very excited to continue teaching back home, and while I’ll be back in America it will be a new experience for me because I will be teaching in a high school there for the first time. Anyway, I’m very thankful and lucky to have had such a great experience here! I know I’ll definitely come back to Japan again someday!
