Riding the train in the U.K.
Like Japan, the U.K. is a small island country where it’s convenient to travel by train. There are many similarities, but also a few differences I’d like to tell you about! Let’s take a look at five main points:
1) Buying a Ticket
In the U.K. we select the destination station first, NOT the ticket fare. It’s very different to Japan! Once you enter the destination on the machine, you can select the number of adults and children and see the total price. Then, you can pay with cash or a debit or credit card.
2) Discount Ticket Fares
There are several discounts available. If you travel on weekends or at quiet times, you can buy a cheaper off-peak ticket or save even more by travelling off-peak with a group ticket. Some rail companies also allow you to book cheaper tickets in advance.
TIP: Check for discounts before you buy a ticket!
3) Using an Oyster Card
An Oyster Card is an IC card that can be used on trains and buses in the London area. It’s convenient, but be careful! It can’t be used outside the London area.
4) Train Manners
Like Japan, there are certain things that are good manners, such as giving up your seat for elderly or disabled passengers. Also, you should let other passengers leave the train before boarding.
5) Riding a Steam Locomotive
There are several sightseeing lines where you can ride a traditional steam train! It’s a lot of fun, just like an Agatha Christie story. I recommend the Spa Valley Railway near my hometown in Kent.
There we have it, five points about riding trains! Would you like to ride a train in the U.K. someday? Let me know!
