Hi this is Robert! I would like to share an amusing anecdote about an experience I had years ago when I first came to Japan.
I was walking around Ageo in Saitama one brisk fall evening. Feeling a bit peckish, I decided to find something hot to eat. I walked into a noodle bar filled with serious looking businessmen in suits slurping steaming bowls of noodles. I didn’t speak much Japanese back then and the staff didn’t speak English, so I pointed to a bowl of soup and the server nodded enthusiastically.
I was feeling a little homesick so I was in the mood for some soul food. For me at that time, soul food on a chilly evening was chicken noodle soup. I really wanted chicken in my soup but no matter how slowly, clearly and loudly I said CHICKEN, the server still somehow didn’t understand.
As a last resort, I stood up and a little shyly began flapping my elbows and clucking like a chicken. Some of the serious suits laughed but I got my chicken noodle soup that night and I felt much better.
