Hello!! 駅前留学でお馴染み、NOVA西宮北口校。
本日は、オーストラリア出身の講師、Thomas先生よりオーストラリアの冬のスポーツをご紹介いたします⚽
Ball sports are the most common winter sports in Australia. Soccer is the one sport that is played all over the country, especially by kids, but it is not the most popular. Rugby and Australian Rules Football are the most popular. Rugby is mostly played in Sydney and Brisbane while ‘Aussie Rules’ is played in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Professional games for these two sports are watched by many people on tv and of course at the stadiums. It might come as a surprise but rugby has two variations: rugby union which is also played in Japan and rugby league. Union is a fast moving variety of rugby whereas league is a more physical game.
Being such a warm and dry country, Australia doesn’t have winter sports like in Japan. There is only one small part of Australia centered on Mount Kosciusko (2300m) that plays host to sports that we can see at the Winter Olympics. In fact, there are only about 10 ski resorts in the area and therefore in all of Australia. Snow-making machines are also common because the resorts don’t always have a good coverage of natural snow. Where there is natural snow, it is never of the powder variety as we can find in Hokkaido. It is for this reason that many Australians, both professional and amateur, travel to New Zealand in July and to Japan in January, in search of powder snow. Interestingly, Japan’s Olympic Committee (JOC) and the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) have signed an agreement that allows Australia’s Winter Olympians to train in Japan for free.
