Students often ask, what’s the difference between American and British English? Of course, the pronunciation is different and sometimes, vocabulary is different, too. In this blog, though, we’ll look at a few differences in grammar.
みなさんからよく聞かれる『アメリカ英語』と『イギリス英語』の違いについてですが、もちろん、発音は異なり、語彙も異なります。今回のブログでは、文法の違いをいくつか見ていきましょう！
On / at the weekend
I went hiking on the weekend. – American English (on)
I might go to the beach at the weekend. – British English (at)
週末/ 私は週末にハイキングに行きました。 –アメリカ英語→（on） 週末はビーチに行くかもしれません。 –イギリス英語（at）
Got / gotten
– I haven’t gotten a new phone for five years. I need a new one! – American English (gotten)
– I’ve got three birthday presents already! – British English (got)
新しい電話を5年間もらっていません。新しいものが必要です！ –アメリカ英語（gotten） -私はすでに3つの誕生日プレゼントを持っています！ –イギリス英語（got）
the football / football
– Are you watching the football tonight? – British English
– Are you watching football tonight? – American Englishイギリス英語は（the)がつきます。
in hospital / in the hospital
– I was in hospital at the weekend, but now I’m okay. – British English.
– I was in the hospital on the weekend, but now I’m okay. – American English.→アメリカ英語は（the)がつきます。
