Hello!
My name is Vanya and I am excited to have you in my classroom. A little bit about me:
I graduated from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa with a bachelor’s degree in Japanese Language and Literature, a bachelor’s degree in Second Language Studies (Applied Linguistics), and certificates in Russian, German, and Teaching English as a Second Language. My courses in applied linguistics were primarily focused in English language education and I have published work in the field of sociolinguistics related to English education.
After graduating, I worked in New York City for 2 and a half years as an elementary and middle school English teacher for Success Academy Charter Schools, the largest charter school network in the United States, where my classes were frequently ranked within the top three best performing by test scores. I also taught special education students throughout my time in this position and have experience in designing individual education plans (IEPs) to meet the needs of students.
I later began teaching Elementary School Education at Zhengzhou Normal University in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan Province in China. I taught future elementary school teachers how to teach English and write lesson plans to target student needs and common problems Mandarin speakers have when learning English. I also had the opportunity to mentor a few local elementary school English teachers and meet local primary school students.
My biggest strength as an educator is diagnosing the problems my students face and finding a way to make sure they achieve to their highest potential. I hope to do the same for you!
I chose to come to Japan because of my familiarity with Japanese culture and my appreciation for Japanese history. I have traveled and lived in many other interesting places including the Bahamas, Ukraine, Germany, the UK, Ireland, Thailand, and Canada. Travel has helped me experience new cultures and think much more freely
As for hobbies, when I am not with my friends, I spend the majority of my time studying Japanese in preparation for the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). I also enjoy cooking/baking, exercise, and watching YouTube, especially videos about history, world events, and documentaries.
I hope to get to know more about you and your interests as well! No matter what your goal is, we can surely achieve it through meaningful practice in a comfortable learning environment here at NOVA.
