Hello everyone!

My name is Jessica and I’m from New Zealand.

I hope that everyone had a lovely Obon last week and that you all are enjoying summer so far.

What are your favorite activities to do in summer? My favourite summer activity in Japan is watching fireworks. I think Japan’s fireworks are very beautiful and artistic. In New Zealand I only ever saw fireworks on New Year’s Day or Guy Fawkes Night in November.

Does anyone know Guy Fawkes? Guy Fawkes is an annual event where we have bonfires and fireworks. My uncle would often host a small fireworks party on his farm every year.

I also enjoy the many summer festivals they have in Japan. This year I went to the Mitarashi Festival at Shimogamo Shrine in Kyoto. The water I had to walk in was very cold but refreshing! I highly recommend going there if you get the chance.

Another thing I find refreshing is shaved ice! Japanese shaved ice is perfect for cooling down in the hot summer weather. There are many flavors to chose from but my favorite is mango shaved ice.
