“So Akira, is there anything fun to do in Nara during Obon?” Jim asked. “I’ve got a week’s vacation and I’ve been saving a lot of money.”

“It’s pretty hot, but you could go to an onsen,” said Akira. “However, most of them have been booked solid for the last three months.”

“What about somewhere else?” asked Jim. “I want to be able to see the real Japan.”

“The biggest thing about this time is the Obon rush. Most families are heading home for the holidays, so the roads are packed, and don’T even get me started on the amusement parks.” Akira shivered.

“Is there anything fun to do in Obon?” Jim sighed. “You make it all sound so depressing.”

“Well, there are Bon Odori dances held across Kansai. You could check them out,” said Akira.

“Great! How do I find them?”

“Just do an internet search. Hundreds of places should pop up. People wear yukata’s, there are food stalls. It’s great fun,” said Akira.

“Anything else?” asked Jim.

“On August 16, there are massive bonfires lit in Kyoto in the shape of kanji. It marks the end of the Obon season,” said Akira.

“You mean the Daimonji!” Jim said. “I’ve heard of that.I’ve always wanted to check that out.”

“The Daimonji is in Nara city on the 15th,” said Akira. “They look similar, but they represent two separate things. Nara’s is a memorial to all the people who died in wars. It’s a symbol of world peace. I’m not sure about Kyoto’s.”

“Maybe I’ll check both out. That sounds really cool,” said Jim. “Thanks.”

“No problem,” said Akira.
