If you feel nervous when English speakers ask you questions, especially in busy places like Kyoto in April. Don’t worry—you don’t need perfect English to communicate. Simple and clear answers are enough.
Here are some useful “go-to” phrases:
- “Could you say that again?”→ When you didn’t catch the question
- “Sorry, I don’t understand.”→ When you’re confused
- “Do you mean…?”→ To check what the person is asking
If you need more time, you can say:
- “Let me think for a moment.”→ A natural way to pause
If they are speaking too fast:
- “I’m sorry, could you speak more slowly please.”→ A polite way to ask them to speak slower.
And if it feels too difficult, it’s okay to say:
- “I’m still learning English.”→ Most people will understand and be patient
Remember, communication is more important than being perfect. Even short answers and simple phrases can help you have a good conversation.
