Why Does Every Day Have a Name in Japan?

One of the interesting things I’ve noticed while living in Japan is that almost every day seems to have a name. Not a national holiday or anything official—just something like “Cat Day,” “Meat Day,” or, as I saw recently in my elevator, “Good Tooth Day.” At first, it felt completely random. Who decides these things? And why are there so many of them?

It turns out there’s a system behind it, and once you understand it, you start seeing it everywhere.

The idea is called 語呂合わせ (goroawase), a kind of wordplay that uses numbers to create sounds, and those sounds turn into words. Japanese numbers have multiple readings, which means a single number can be pronounced in different ways depending on the context. That flexibility allows people to combine numbers and “build” words out of dates. So when I saw that April 18 was “Good Tooth Day,” it wasn’t random at all—4 can be read as “yo,” 1 as “i,” and 8 as “ha,” which together sound like yoi ha, meaning “good teeth.” Once I realized that, everything clicked.

And then it became impossible not to notice it.

February 22 is “Cat Day” because the number 2 can sound like nyan, the Japanese version of a cat’s “meow,” so the date becomes nyan nyan nyan. The 29th of every month is “Meat Day” because 2 and 9 can be read as ni and ku, forming niku (meat). March 9 turns into “Thank You Day” because san and kyuu sound like the English phrase “thank you,” and November 22 becomes “Good Couple Day” because the numbers can be read as ii fuufu, meaning “good couple.”

What makes this especially interesting from a foreigner’s perspective is that we simply don’t have an equivalent system in English. We use puns and wordplay, of course, but numbers are rigid. “April 18” will always just be “April eighteenth.” There’s no flexibility in pronunciation, no alternate readings to play with, and no easy way to turn it into something meaningful or memorable.

Now, whenever I see a date in Japan, I automatically wonder what it might mean. Sometimes the answer is clever, sometimes it’s a bit strange, but either way, it adds a small moment of curiosity to an otherwise ordinary day.
