Hello👋How are you?

”Midwest Goodbye”

For those of you who I haven’t met, I’m from the United States. I lived in California (mostly San Francisco) for almost 5 years before moving to Japan. Before California, though, I was living in the state of Illinois. The famous city, Chicago, is in Illinois. Illinois is right in the center of what we call “The Midwest” – it’s not the West Coast, it’s not the East Coast, it’s just in the middle and kind of to the West. People from the US are often known for being friendly and talkative, almost to a fault. Because of this, we have a funny phrase called the “Midwest Goodbye”. A Midwest Goodbye is when someone says that they are leaving, but does not actually leave right away. For example, imagine that you are visiting a friend’s house and you say “Well, it’s getting late. I need to head home.” You put your jacket on and go to the door. Your friend walks with you to the door to say goodbye. Instead of leaving, though, you start talking again. And you talk and talk and talk. Before you know it, you and your friend have been talking for another 30 minutes to an hour, sometimes even longer! This whole process is jokingly and lovingly referred to as a Midwest Goodbye. I didn’t learn this term myself until a few years ago, but I can assure you that I experienced this phenomena countless times! I’m curious if there’s something similar to this in Japan. If anyone happens to see me at one of the NOVA schools, let me know if you’ve ever experienced something similar!

Brooks
