Australian Wildlife
Australia is internationally renowned for its wildlife. When many people think of Australia, they instantly think of the iconic species that call the rugged continent home. From the cute and cuddly creatures like koalas and wombats, to the venomous snakes, spiders, and jellyfish that strike fear into the hearts of locals and tourists alike. Australia would simply not be the country that it is without its diverse natural environment.

Snakes. Most of the deadliest snakes in the world can be found in Australia. As a result of this, Australians are well-trained to be cautious when hiking and enjoying the natural environment. It is a good idea to wear thick boots and long pants in high-risk areas, even on the hottest days of the year. Even swimmers must take caution in the ocean, due to the presence of highly-venomous sea snakes.
Koalas. Perhaps the most renowned Australian animal in existence. These cuddly creatures can be found all over the continent, eating the leaves from eucalyptus trees and sleeping for up to 22 hours a day. Many visitors to wildlife reserves and zoos enjoy the opportunity of getting a photograph with these national icons.
Jellyfish. Most tourists are well aware of the danger posed by snakes, but fewer may realize that jellyfish can prove just as deadly. Found in the waters surrounding Australia, jellyfish present quite the hazard to unsuspecting swimmers. Especially in the case of predators like the box jellyfish. Inhabiting the warmer waters like those of North Queensland, the box jellyfish is capable of delivering a sting which can kill a human being within two minutes. Although fatalities are relatively rare, there have still been dozens reported over the past century.

Kangaroos. As one of the two animals (alongside the emu) depicted on the Australian Coat of Arms, the kangaroo holds a special place in Australian culture. Kangaroos are so numerous in Australia, that they actually outnumber human beings. If you are in more rural parts of the country, it is not at all uncommon to spot a kangaroo in the wild, even wandering into your own backyard. It is also possible to see kangaroos in zoos and wildlife preserves. One of my favorite childhood memories is hand-feeding dozens of kangaroos in a large wildlife reserve. The babies (known as “joeys”) are particularly cute and affectionate.
