The Grand Canyon
Located in Northern Arizona, the Grand Canyon is 446 km long, up to 29 km wide and over 1.8 km deep. Over the last 5 to 6 million years, the Colorado river has been carving its way through the layers of sedimentary rock to create the canyon. It is home to lots of wildlife including snakes, mountain lion, big horn sheep and gila monsters. Indigenous peoples also still live in the canyon, Havasupai and Hualapai being the most prominent.
The Grand Canyon attracts upwards of 5 million people every year. The South Rim is open year round while the North Rim is usually open from May to October.
Visitors can take in the canyon by camping, rafting, hiking running and even helicopter tours. Popular camping areas in the canyon are Mather Campground, Havasupai Gardens Campground and Bright Angel Campground.
Hiking and running through the canyon’s robust trail system has become increasingly popular with trail goers. Many of them hiking down to the river, from rim to rim and even a double crossing of the canyon known as rim to rim to rim. The latter covering around 80km with an elevation gain of 3,400meters.
The beauty of the canyon does not come without its dangers. Every year, 10-12 people die on average. The leading causes of death include cardiac arrest, heat stroke and falls. If you are planning a visit to the canyon, be sure to dress accordingly, bring plenty of water and know your physical capabilities.
