The American Winter Holidays:

Celebrations of Light
During winter, Americans celebrate three major holidays
that bring warmth and light to the season.
Christmas, on December 25th, is the most widely celebrated,
focusing on family, decorated trees, and gift-giving,
symbolized by Santa Claus.
Hanukkah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, lasts eight nights
and commemorates a miracle of oil. Families light candles
on a nine-branched menorah, enjoy foods fried in oil like
latkes, and exchange small gifts.
Kwanzaa, from December 26th to January 1st, honors
African-American culture and the “Seven Principles”,
including unity and creativily. Families light a kinara and
celebrate with music, art, and reflection.

Thought their origins differ, all three holidays share
themes of family, community, and hope, lighting the way
into the New Year.
