Sports in Australia

Sports are a strong component of Australia’s national identity. Whether it is supporting their favorite team on television, going to the stadium, or participating in their leisure time, Australians are rather obsessed with sports. Some international sports such as soccer and basketball enjoy a great deal of popularity in Australia, but there are other sports that are more iconic and central to the Australian experience.

Rugby League is the most popular sport in New South Wales and Queensland, and their respective capitals of Sydney and Brisbane. It is a variant of Rugby Union, the sport that most people think of when they hear the word “rugby”. Rugby League has thirteen players on the field rather than Union’s fifteen, there is less emphasis on kicking, and teams cannot hold onto possession indefinitely. Some would say it is simpler and more free-flowing than Union. The annual State of Origin series between New South Wales and Queensland-born players is typically the most watched TV event of the year in Australia.

Australian Rules is a uniquely Australian sport. Most of its fanbase is concentrated in Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia, with Melbourne being considered the home of Aussie Rules. Aussie Rules is the most highly-attended spectator sport in the country. It is played on a large oval field with eighteen players on each team. Points are scored by kicking the ball through the four posts located at each end of the field. There is a very strong emphasis on kicking and catching in this sport, with tall players often dominating the league. Aussie Rules is frequently lauded for its athleticism and aerial acrobatics.

Cricket is the traditional summer sport of Australia. It shares some similarities with baseball, a sport that is not widely watched in Australia. In cricket, the bowler (similar to a pitcher) must deliver the ball by bouncing it towards the batter, who will try to hit it. Players can score by running from one end of the “wicket” to the other, or by hitting it far over the boundary line (like a home run). The bi-annual Ashes Series against England is considered one of the most important events in the Australian sporting calendar. It is a common sight to see families palying their own small game of backyard or beach cricket on hot, summer days.

Surfing is an iconic Australian pastime. The vast majority of Australians live in close proximity to the beach, so it is common for Aussies to spend much of their childhood swimming in the ocean. This has made Australia quite the powerhouse in the world of Olympic swimming, but also rather adept surfers. Australia boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, from Bondi Beach to Bells Beach, and many in between. In addition to being a fun way to enjoy the summer, Australia is the home of many professional surfing events, attracting top talent from all over the world.
