Where Halloween Comes From
Halloween is a fun holiday. People wear costumes, go trick-or-treating, and play games like apple bobbing. But Halloween actually started a long time ago in Ireland.
About 2,000 years ago, the Celtic people in Ireland celebrated a special festival called Samhain (say: “sow-in”). This festival was on October 31st, the last day of the harvest season. People believed that on this night, the line between the world of the living and the world of the dead became very thin. That meant spirits could come back to the earth.
Some of these spirits were good, but some were bad. So people wore costumes and masks to scare away or hide from the bad spirits. They also made fires and gave food as offerings.
Later, when Christianity came to Ireland, this festival mixed with new religious holidays like All Saints’ Day (November 1st). The night before became known as All Hallows’ Eve, which slowly changed into the word Halloween.
What Do People Do on Halloween?
Trick-or-treating: Children dress up in costumes and go from house to house, knocking on doors. They say “trick or treat!” and people give them candy or sweets.
Apple bobbing: This is a Halloween game. Apples are put in a big bowl of water. Players try to grab an apple using only their mouth — no hands!
